Depending upon the program you have *associated with pictures/graphics....(*meaning=the program they open in when you click on them or the graphics program you use to open them with)

You should have choices in the format you want the gif saved in available to you when you open the gif. Once opened, the programs top toolbar will have the option as follows:
*Select the button named "FIle ", scroll to and select "save as ".
*A dropdown arrow will be on the right side of the "Save As" type-in field which should open up or drop down a list of available extensions for you to convert and save it as.
*Choose jpg give your gif-ala-jpg a name and save.

NOTE*Even the basic windows Paint has this ability.

I could be more specific if I knew what you were using to open these in.

Ever tried Irfanview? Allow me to introduce you two:

You'll need the plug-ins. The link is on the same download link above (on the bottom of the page) but in case you missed it:

    Opps,
I see, from Aries post below, that you need to edit your posts "Subject" field with a meaningful topic line. Suggestion would be "convert gif to jpg, How-to? ".

Picture-Convert gif to jpg, How to?

I guess that I should have given more information. I have XP Home. I received a picture in email from a 35mm color slide. I want to save in "My Pictures ". When I right clicked and saved to My Pictures it saved it as a gif file. Clicking on 'Save as Type'--4 items are shown--Mail (*.eml), Text Files (*.txt), Unicode Text Files (*.txt) and HTML Files (*.htm; *.html).

Does this help so I can change it from gif to jpg?

Thanks for the info on infanview also.

    Artbea ...

In all likelihood, it was saved as a .gif because it was sent as a .gif, and even if you convert it to a .jpg the picture quality won't be improved.

Ask whoever sent it to you to resend it as a high quality .jpg or, better yet, as a .png.

    Ut-Oh,

Complications! This sounds like an embedded picture with or without attached picture. I get embedded pictures (without attachment) sent to me this way often. The way I do it is save the picture by right clicking on it, as you have done. It's saved in what ever format the picture is defaulted to. Meaning if it is a gif it's saved as a gif, if its a jpg its saved as a jpg etc.

Email programs are basically text processors and not Graphic Programs. They're limited in what they can do.

Once the picture is saved, you open it in an application that can convert it. The directions I previously gave you apply here.

If you have downloaded irfanview, you can then dragNdrop this *.gif onto the irfanview icon and use the Toolbar>File> "save as ">dropdown_ "select desired format" and Irfanview will convert it for you.

Sorry, this is the method I am familiar with. If there's another way someone will have to append those directions to the post. In the mean time I hope this helps...:)

    ===F.Y.I (friendly reminder)====
Not to nag but you've got to edit your "Subject" Title Field for this post or Arie will lock it out.

    goddez1 ...

It doesn't matter whether the image is embedded or attached. When you save it, it's going to be saved in whatever format it was sent, no matter what extension you give it.

In other words, if you send me a file called test.jpg, even if I change the name to test.bmp when I save it, it's still a .jpg.

You can prove this for yourself by saving an emailed image twice, using a different extension the second time ...
    • 1) the file sizes will be the same.

      2) f you open them with a hex editor, the filetypes on the top line will be identical.

      3) if you try to open the misnamed one with IrfanView you'll get a warning message stating "The file: 'test.bmp' is a JPG file with incorrect extension" then asking if you want to rename it.
You're correct that IrfanView (or any image editing program) can convert from one image type to another, but it's important to remember the old adage that "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear ". In other words, you can't improve the quality (read resolution) of an image by converting it. You can change the size of the file, but you may degrade the image, as well.

Particularly when working on a .jpg, it's best to convert it to .bmp, .png, or .tif format before doing so as, otherwise, image quality will be lost everytime the image is saved.

Here is an opportunity for me to show my ignorance.
Do others confirm this? I can understand that you are not going to improve the quality of an image by changing its file type from .jpg to .bmp, but I certainly would think I would change the file type and its opening to whatever program is associated with .bmp.
There is the IE bug that prevents .jpg, etc. from being saved as anything but .bmp.

Internet Explorer saves images as bitmaps (.bmp Files)

If it does not make any difference, why is there a fix?

artbea--If that .gif file has an animated image, it will not be animated when you change it to .jpg.

:) I knew my post was full of holes a mac truck could drive through.

I was just directing my answer to the question posted. I didn't want to over whelm the poster with nfo overload which would have required a bunch of questions prior to answers.

I made some assumptions, leaps of faith and a judgment call. Glad other members have stepped in to fill in some of those holes.

Photo editing and printing advice take much more study-ups, practice, tools and techniques than I personally cared to dip into. I just didn't want to open Pandora's box. While curiosity can be fun it oft times ends with the death of the mouse.

I'm afraid I opened a can of worms (Pandora's box, if you prefer, Ann) by expanding the thread far beyond the question that artbea asked. And, BTW, curiosity killed the cat ... not the mouse. :)

Not ignorance, WelshJim, but curiosity and an open mind.

To begin with, we're talking about images either embedded in, or attached to, an email ... nothing at all to do with Internet Explorer.

Perhaps I went out on a limb when I said "When you save it, it's going to be saved in whatever format it was sent, no matter what extension you give it ", as I honestly don't know if that applies to all of the many email programs in use ... all I can say is that it's true of Mozilla Thunderbird, the email program I use.

I don't know why artbea wanted to convert her .gif image to a .jpg, because it still would be limited to 256 colors, the detail would remain the same, and the file size almost certainly would be larger.

Once an image, no matter how it was obtained (email, webpage, scanner, or digital camera), is saved, you can do anything you want with it, using any of the many image editing programs available. The point I was trying to make (even though artbea didn't ask about it) is that editing a .jpg image will result in loss of resolution and detail each time it's saved. Therefore, it should be converted to a lossless format, such as .bmp, .png, or .tif, for editing purposes, then converted back to .jpg format for archiving (if you choose to do so).

My personal feeling is that whatever image viewer you use, be it ACDSee, IrfanView, or Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, it should open ALL of your image types. It seems pointless to have one image format opened by one program and another by a second program.

For anyone who works with images of any type, I recommend a $39 shareware program called Image Optimizer. All image editing programs permit cropping and resizing, as well as a host of other features, but Image Optimizer is the only one I've found that gives complete control over image compression.

Pictures-convert gif to jpg, How to?

I have emailed my brother, who sent me the gif, to resend as a jpg. He did. I now have it in the file where I want it. For your information I wanted as jpg so I could make a jigsaw using jigzone jigsaw maker. Only jps's will do it. (I have to keep my wife happy).

Thank you all for your help. I've been using a computer for four years and still consider myself as a biginner.

    InfanView works just fine. Thanks.

    Hi Art,

Sorry I gave you a gender change, but I assumed incorrectly that your name was Bea; I should have read your last post more carefully. Your jigsaw puzzle project sounds interesting, and you're right ... it's good to keep the wife happy.

    Thanks for posting back.
