In many ways XP = NT

I have never had a problem running anything,
that was NT compatible, on an XP machine.

    Also:

On XP you can run programs in "compatibility "
mode, if they were designed for Win9x O/S.

Just run the "Program Compatibility Wizard ".

I had a problem but finally it works-don't know why

I spent at least 7 hours installing and uninstalling my 7600 scanner. I followed all the instructions given by Visioneer but I kept getting a message that my computer could not recognize the hardware on my USB port. The driver would load OK but when it came time to plug in scanner, my computer would not recognize it. Finally I decided to change the USB cable to v2.0 compliant (the original one was probably not v2.0) and I plugged it into a different USB port.
Lo and behold to my amazement, it worked--totally unexpected.
I have several thoughts. First my computer has 6 USB ports, so obviously there is a hub. Some USB devices do not like hubs, like my external 120GB harddrive will only work on the firewire ports. Perhaps, when I changed the USB port, it was not on a hub? Also I suppose the wire could have something to do with it.
I do know that on my old computer certain programs had to be running for the scanner to start up. Of the 4 such programs, only 2 seem to be starting up on XP: FBDirect and PPWebCap. Stillimage and Registerdrophandler are not in the startup programs nor is InstantAccess.. I don't know why.
Anyway, to those who are still having problems, try using a new cable and put it into different USB ports. Also use the new driver 7600u2k.exe. I'm just lucky it works. I was going to upgrade the Paperport software to v.8 but I'll wait a bit on that. Also establish a restore point before you monkey around. I did and did the restore once. It seems not all files are removed but some are renamed like
    scanfoft(2).exe, etc.

Good afternoon (my time) to Staff and readers,
My attempts to reinstall Visioneer 7600 with PaperPort 6.5 on my new Dell 4600 with Win XP were not successful. In fact a "crash" with the black screen of death occurred. I had to place a call to Dell for assistance. Hence, I've been reluctant to attempt another installation. The Windows XP software had posted a warning during the PaperPort 6.5 effort indicating incompatibility.

One of the earlier contributors mentioned using "compatibility for" retrictions during installation. Could you tell me how to condition a future installation? The standard use of the Add and Remove icon on the Control Panel lacks this option, at least in my hands! Am I doing something wrong?
    Sincerely,
    Scott :(

    In Win XP:

    Start | Programs | Accessories ...
    use the Program Compatibility Wizard.

    7600

    Hi Scott,
I have now upgraded the Paperport from v6.5 to v8.2 after an upgrade from v8.0 which I bought in a box. I really do think you can get your 7600 to work, but you have to follow those instructions given in that Visioneer memo exactly and I would first create a systenm restore point. If you get to the point where your computer tries to connect the scanner but can't seem to find it, try a v2.0 USB cable and try different USB ports. I did use the restore once and it worked very well.
