Over the pass 2 weeks, updates were extremely slow to download(dialup). Now for the last 2 days, it won't update. Keeps telling me no connection available. Went to their site and downloaded from there. (now running build 611) Anyone else having this problem?

I tried to update AVG free version on my laptop yesterday afternoon via DSL connection. I got the the AVG website and the updater status information appeared but nothing happened - no indication of downloading taking place. Later when I tried to close the window, it asked if I wanted to stop the download - but no download to stop. Haven't tried since. Will try again tomorrow when I get the laptop out.

My son is on dial-up, and we had very same experience.
What I tried for him, and it worked, I let that "connecting..." window sit there for a while, and it finaly it started to download, after sitting idle for a few minutes.

Speaking from experience of my own that work-around may not be in your best interest.

I had all kinds of problems uppdating the free version 6 and I am on Cable Internet. And that was in both Win98SE and XP Pro.

I upgraded to a newer version and all is quite well. ( for the moment anyway )

    Something to think about.

Just one Virus problem caused by an outdated AV program will cost one hell of a lot more than the software.

    Your machine = Your call.

    One more item.

Anti Virus software is one of the few things that I allow to install into the DEFAULT location. Anywhere else it may not work properly. ( at least as far as updating goes )

Thank you for the URL fix. I was having the same problems a week ago and even though they seemed to fix them I added the others anyway in case it happens again. :)

    Billybob,
Why do you not allow updates to go to the default folder please?

I believe in paying for pro etc versions of software if they are useful and reasonably priced so I have AVG Pro with automatic daily updates. I haven't had any trouble as far as I know but would it be a good idea to add that 3rd server anyhow?

    ?????

I do allow the AVG ( or any Anti-virus and/or Firewall ) install and updates to go to the default locations.

It is 98% of other software that I do not let go to the default location. If I did I would be running out of room on my C: drive.

I have very little stuff other then the OS on the C: drive.

I have a 60Gb un-partitioned drive. I've read that partitioning might be a good idea but is it really an advantage these days with such large discs and Windows XP??

The OS realy has nothing to do with it.

Yes. I believe it is an advantage. A BIG ONE. It prevents losing everything if the C: drive goes bonkers by keeping the OS and programs and their data separated.

My C: drive is only 6gig. ( 2.5gig free ) The other 74gig is divided into 5 more partitions. Each one has a purpuse. The H: partiton is where all downloaded things and various backups are stored. I have no desire to lose the hundreds of downloads. Also most of them are burned on CDs too.

    PS
One partiton has nothing but Links LS 2003 Golf on it.

It said the file was damaged and install would not continue, then I tried again and it said it a couple more times. Tried again and it said "Download process cancelled-connection failed. Timeout user request ". Is there something I can do to change that?
