    Hi All,

I used to know how to disable Task Scheduler. After downloading from Microsoft it appeared in my sys tray.
I tried Clicking on" Stop Using Task Schedulerâ€, but it is back the next time I boot up.
    Help

Start>run type msconfig and uncheck it on the startup tab.

In WIN98SE it's called SchedulingAgent and the file it uses is mstask.exe.

Did you by any chance download something called critical update? When you install critical update, it turns on the task scheduler. When you turn off the task scheduler, critical update will turn it back on the next time you boot the computer. The only way I know of to get it to stay off is to uninstall critical update.

    Zander,

    That was exactly correct
I had to uncheck the automatic windows update.
I will check it again after I get DSL installed. For now,
I don’t spend much time on the net, but after DSL is
Working, it can download all it wants.
    Thanks again for your help

Thanks for posting back. When I used win98 I never did install critical update so I wasn't sure if there was an entry in msconfig or not. I only knew for sure that uninstalling it cured the task scheduler problem. Now I know differently. ;)

I had to fire up the Win98 machine to check into this update. I installed critical update #811630 on this machine and got no updater entry in msconfig. Would it be Windows Critical Update Notification 4.0 that puts the entry in that also restarts scheduler? I've never accepted that update so wouldn't know.

Yeah, that's the one. I never accepted it either. I just assumed the msconfig thing because SVEN said
It may be though that unchecking it at windows update was the way to uninstall it and that's what SVEN was talking about although now that I think about it, I don't believe there was anything to uncheck there. There may have been an uninstall button for it at windows update though. I remember there was some updates for 98 that could be uninstalled that way.

Don't use MSCONFIG to disable task scheduler!

Instead. open Scheduled Tasks window, delete any tasks that are listed, click the Advanced Menu, select Stop Using Task Scheduler.

Why? I have it unchecked in "msconfig ", and everything has been working fine for years.

Because it is always better to first disable a startup app within the program itself rather than using msconfig startup list. Possible conflicts can occur, not always, but sometimes.

Even if disabling task sheduler in msconfig startup list, the task scheduler program is still "turned on" and can be activated by spyware dialers, other spyware or viruses, or other software that gets installed. And even if no other software activates the task scheduler program, there are still scheduled tasks in it's task list that can run according to schedule. They won't run at startuop but they still can run later, depending upon the type of task.
