    Hi

Have a laptop running XP Pro and another laptop running
    windows 2000 Pro.

Both machines are trying to dial into a 2003 server.

The 2000 Pro laptop can dial in, authenticate, correct
password and works fine. Using administrator as the
account. When dialed in I am able to remotely controll
    the server.

Yet I have set up dial in access on the XP laptop. When I
dialin as administrator and try to connect I fail to
connect with "Windows was unable to connect to the network
using the user name and password you provided. then after
three tries I get "incorrect username and/or password was
invalid on the domain ". Have tried changing the include
windows domain options, security options and modem options
the administrator account on 2003 server is set for remote
    access.

Yet I can connect fine on the 2000 Laptop.

Am puzzled, I have got to be missing something either at
the server end or the laptop end.

    Anyone?

    Thanks in advance

    Domain or workgroup?

Dialin - RAS to a local connection on the box or RRAS/VPN/Remote Desktop/other?

The laptop is attatched to the domain. The laptop works when attatched via ethernet to the domain. But when you try and dial in to the server it rejects the user name and password.

The modem is installed into the domain controller, they only have one domain controller on the site.

But if you dial in to a different site with the laptop, a site that is not using 2003 server but has a 2000 server. Then the XP laptop authenticates to that server on a different domain, with no problem.

Looks like I may have stumbled across the answer.

IAS was not installed on the 2003 server.

Thanks for posting back with that info.

You might want to take a look at This article on hardening 2003 servers and particularly Chapter 9 - Hardening IAS Servers.
