Just recently, when I click on the 'down arrow' (for previously visited urls) next to the 'address' box in IE it hangs indefinitely and I have to kill it from task manager. I tried rebooting and it worked ok for a bit, then started again. Any way to alleviate this recurring problem.

    Thx.

    mikenowo Hi

Have you done the basics, cleared the cache deleted history
(every couple days) and cookies to once and awhile ?

do you use SpyBot or Adaware --I use both.

Do you update av and actualy run it, also use online virus scans?
Most new PC owners dont know to run their av program --they think they are protected by simply having it and updating...

Any other symtoms even if they seam unrelated ?
Also when Asking questions about IE we need to include version
(all info on help about except product ID)
    and ver of OS

Ive turned off any auto updateing , though this may just be a personal prefrence--I can imagine what would happen if two or more were competing for available bandwidth-not to mention any spyware phoning home..

    resources ?
    memory ?

hitting down arrow hangs internet explorer, may-be a common
    problem, wait for futher Ideas
    Good Luck

I cleared out the history and the problem was fixed (I clean out everything with 'Window Washer' sw once a week, sometimes more often). Still curious to know why it happens though (hasn't been the first time).

Also, I run a virus-scan regularly. IE version is the latest, I believe (v6.0.2800.1106CO).I have Spybot and Adaware but don't run them often. Should I? I don't want to clog my memory with too many TSRs, have enough running already.

    thx,

    Hay mikenowo

I cant explain it in technical terms, the way I understand it is
windows tif is flawed and a page can get currupt cookies to,
history I dont know but to much is not good , I usualy surf about
(to many hours a day) and once offline clear history clear the cache and about once weekly delete cookies, or before connecting

Dont know of Window Washer would rather not complicate matters , do it the old fashioned way if possible(personal preferance) easy to confuse windows with all the addons,
or so called inprovements. Its confused enough already:)

Ive never had to delete the index dat file yet.
have heard it can couse problems also, strange it stays the same size after clearing cache ,history, but on this winMe system
even after reboot there are no tif's or zero bite files.
    Greate site-----http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Im suprised to see you have a custom version of IE- and havent had any problems updating--or other
    v6.0.2800.1106CO-------can be a bad sign--
Co stands for:CO = Corporate Administrator (built by)

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=164539

"I have Spybot and Adaware" are they current >1.2 spybot and build 602 adaware--(without checking)
If not please uninstall redownload and install again as there is some problems reported if we use the update within spybot better to uninstall, and adaware definatly has to be uninstalled first.

also be carefull with IE addons keep to a miniumum-like that ieSpell---If possible check reviews!!

Hmmm.. dunno. I just downloaded an IE6 update from the Microsoft site a while back. Unless they had the wrong version up? Haven't had any update problems with it though, so...(crossing fingers)

Checked the 'shdocvw.dll' file as that page you pointed to suggested and it says the version is 6.00.2800.1154. Go figure. Well, I won't fiddle with it until the next upgrade.. then see what happens.

mikenowo--It won't hurt anything to run Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

The original version came with windows 98. Since then I've only applied updates from the MS website. They must have had an odd one there at one point that I downloaded...?

Oddly, when I run the 'Repair' tool it bombs.
    The error:
"Version 3.1.0.2230 of SCRRUN.DLL exists, but the version needs to be greater than 5.1.0.5010. "

After taking a look at my add/remove program list I see that I have a SP1 applied that I downloaded from MS at one point:
"Microsoft Iinternet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools "

The above error says to reinstall IE ('Please rerun Setup again...'), but do I have to uninstall the SP1 first? Will it keep my bookmarks, etc? Do I have to uninstall OE6 too? Will it keep my address book and messages?

    Suggestions?

BTW, WHICH version SHOULD I have as the most recent right now?

    Thx.

Well I downloaded the most recent IE6 SP1 pack from the MS site. BUT, when I ran the uninstall from add/remove programs for the previous IE6 SP1 install it does not have an option to uninstall. It has 3 options:
    A-Add components
    B-Repair IE
    C-Restore the previous windows configuration

I tried the 3rd (restore previous) and it gave me 3 more options beneath it:
    C1-Restore previous installation...
C2-Delete backup information for IE. This will free up space but you will no longer be able to uninstall IE.
C3-Remove the folder containing Windows Update setup files

I tried C3 and then reinstalled with the new SP but got the same version again.

As for C1 and C2 not sure what they really do, they don't say anything about uninstalling IE itself completely.

As it stands I can't seem to uninstall the version of IE I have and running the SP1 I dl-ed from MS doesn't make a difference.

Also, I still get the same repair error as previously stated.

So unless I can find a way to uninstall this rogue version, what else?

    Thx.

    mikenowo Hello

    " "Suggestions?" " don't get in a rush,hurry, Like I have
One step at a time always best to also wait fir other to chip in to.

BTW, WHICH version SHOULD I have as the most recent right now?
    Version 6.0.2800.1106
    cypher strength: 128

    Update ver: sp1 Q328970-Q 324929-Q 810847-Q 813951

Just a guess right before IE 6 came out there was a trial version
that would have had to have been uninstall-ed.

If I go add remove there are three options
    add a component
    repair
    restore a previous version(configuration)
if I check 3 and OK it only asks are you sure.would take me back to IE5.5SP,ho knows---thats what maybe you should have done.

If I click advanced I can restore to IE6or install the original shockwave
the next one delete the backup etc etc would make the first option unavailable on the first page : restore a previous version(configuration)
Not sure about the third option on the advanced page

Maybe Welshjim would say,, Ive never used the advanced tab except for with add a component

There is a way to surgically remove IE ,But you would need to have the complete IE6sp1 package on hand first.
and its quite complicated.downloaded from other that MS
    I THINK

remind us again version of IE include all info and The OS

    Regards
    Lonny

Ok, this time I tried your suggestion, I chose #3 without using the 'Advanced' button. It took me to the 'Restore previous version...' screen and I chose Ok. Unfortunately in my case it didn't revert to IE5, as one might hope, but to this version (still a CO/custom version, just earlier):

    6.0.2600.0000CO

    ===

After doing the 'restore to previous...' as stated above, I now have this:

    IE:
    ---
    Version: 6.0.2600.0000CO
    Cypher strength: 128
    Product ID: 50293-578-9413227-04097
    Update Versions: Q323759; q313829

    Windows:
    --------
Windows 98 [4.10.1998] (original Win98 CD: this is *not* Win98SE)

    ===

Well, the update that I installed was after IE6 first came out. For whatever reason, it seems to have been a customized version that I picked up from the MS site at some point without realizing it (maybe someone put it up there by mistake?) Whatever the reason, I can't uninstall this custom version (it's sunk its teeth into the system and won't let go <g>).

In any event, that's where I sit right now. My problem is how to oust this custom version to be able to install the correct update. It may come down to your suggestion about surgically removing it. I imagine I could try Norton UnInstall to take it out, but that may cause more trouble.

I'll do as you said, and see what other possibilities are posted and take it from there. IE *is* working, so it's not a show stopper, just a puzzler.

    Thx.

If you are using 98 or ME, go to the Windows Update site and get the Internet Explorer Navigation Sound Update. It is one of the Recommended Updates or now called Windows XX.
The following is a quote from the Read More link.

    mikenowo Hi

I agree: subject get rid of custom version. Might see if addremove IE6 offers restore a previous version(configuration)
    again or and (IT should)
on that advanced page: restore the previous installation< mine though only offers IE 6

I thought everything was good till Welshjim suggested repair
    why I cant figure.
But its good to find out the repair wont work
beforehand and be able to try something in spare time rather than have to because something must be fixed-Now-

    Bye for now

Well, I guess it was because mikenowo said he still had a problem.
And now that we know he cannot run from the normal access, here is MSKB on the subject
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;194177&
Note that at the bottom, there is also an opportunity to run IE Repair from a Command Prompt.

I don't know if you're still having a problem with this. But, I just finally got sick of it and downloaded "Avant" browser. It took about 15 seconds to install and everything works great now. And, I swear it loads pages twice as fast. (Oh yea, and it's free)

My only regret is I can't get rid of Explorer and IExplorer permanently. :D

    Avant Browser
