I am using a linksys wireless router and running norton personal firewall, I have changed my ssid. Is there anyway to tell if someone is tapping into my internet connection. I turn my PC off when not in use but my router stays on. Also what steps can I take to better secure myself. Thank you.

Make sure you change the router password. The default is admin and everybody knows that. If still set to the default, someone could sit out in their car on your street and have access.

That done, you are safe and secure from intrusion.

If one is using encryption, is there any need to change the password unless you want to stop anyone altering the router setting using a network cable connection into the router?

Always change the password from the defauly whether using wireless or wired. A wireless router can be accessed by anyone within range with a wireless card and he could change router settings, get www access, discover your workgroup name and access your networked systems. A wired connection is tougher to access but can be done easily by those that know how to do it.
