Greetings, all, from sunny South Texas. As a long-time and well-content NS4.79 user, I accepted my Tech's recommendation to upgrade to NS7.1 on my office 2.1ghz AMD running WinXP-Pro. Transfer of POP account profiles and folders went well but I elected to keep 4.79 just in case. Now, after 3 weeks, and much fine-tuning, I am challenged my this INSANE 7.1 email password pop-up as each of several accounts is loaded for mail delivery.
Other than this, 7.1 is _okay_ and everything works as usual.

My eyes and nerves are weary of numerous net searches/results to determine a solution. (A) I selected and also later de-selected "Remember PW" under EDIT - PREF - PRIV & SEC - PW; some account PWs were stored under "Manage Stored Passwords" while others were not. (B) Under EDIT - MAIL & NG ACCT SET - OUTGOING SMTP SERVER I also selected and later de-selected "Use name & password" giving only the user name since there was no place to key a password. (What's with that?)

Even with 1ghz of sdram, I periodically run System Mechanic v3.8b (lately have even disabled HKEY_CURRENT_USERS, HKEY_USERS, & HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE), Window Washer 4.5, Norton SystemWorks 2003 CleanSweep Fast & Safe Cleanup, and XP's Disk Cleanup. Is one of these a possible conflict causer? They never upset my 4.79 (smile).

Even though it's time to Move On and use 7.1, I find myself resorting to my faithful 4.79 since the PW prompt isn't an issue and, believe me, I HATE ENTERING THE PASSWORDS repeatedly if only once during each session.

My long-suffering Tech does not support NS and I'm not going to use OE, so, before I uninstall 7.1 and return to my horse-n-buggy 4.79, might some kind soul please furnish good counsel in effecting a solution to my tedious nightmare?

    Sincere thanks for any assistance.

    Welcome to the Forum, quietime!

    Hi Tom,

When you set up your Mail Accounts with the Mail Account Wizard, at that time you should have been prompted for your Passwords.

    Check in:
    Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Passwords
    Have you enabled: Remember Passwords
    Is your Mail password listed?

Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Outgoing servers (SMTP)
Ensure "Use name and password" is enabled

    Click: Advanced tab
    Select: SMTP server
    Click: Edit
Ensure "Use name and password" is enabled

If all settings are enabled, then disable them
    Close, and then re-start Netscape
Go back and RE-enable the settings
Often the settings aren't retained on the first try, and more than one attempt has to be made in order to retain the settings

Let us know if this helps. If not, then the next workaround I would suggest is to remove all Passwords, and begin again.

It could very well be one of your third party programs that you mentioned. Disable them one by one to see which one might be the offender, and could very well be removing pertinent data.

    Ramona :D
