Recently installed N 7.1. (Also had installed an anti virus upgrade), have done a repair on my W2000 OS due to other issues but now realize Sent and Drafts aren't saved to folders. Read previous post from Nkiefer on 1/7/2003, deleted sent.msf and draft.msf files, verified "Empty trash on Exit" is disabled, Sent/Draft folder attributes are not set for "read only ". Have tired uninstalling, reinstalling to no avail. I'm tired.
    Your suggestions?
    Bill

Welcome to the Forum, Bill G!

    Hi Bill G,

Are the recipients receiving the mail you send? Uninstalling and reinstalling Netscape will do nothing for your problem, as it lies in the Profile.

In the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings:
Check the Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings: see if the "Use Name and Password" is enabled. Although it may not cause any apparent problem, there is no logical reason for enabling.
Also ensure that "Use Secure Connection (SSL)" is disabled.

    Next:
    Click on the Advanced Tab
    Select: Always use default server
If there is more than one server listing (assuming you have only one) delete any duplicate listings, or any blank spaces between the listings, if any

You might also move all Mail in the Sent and Drafts location to a temporary folder. Close Netscape, open Windows Explorer, and delete the Drafts, Drafts, msf, Sent, and Sent.msf files. Start Netscape, and new folders will be created. Send yourself an email, and then compose a message and try to save it to Drafts. Does this work?

Another question: is your ISP SBCglobal, PacBell, or Ameritech?

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

    Good morning Ramona-
Messages WERE being sent prior to disabling the "Use Name and Password" feature. SSL was already disabled. Only one server is listed and used as the default. Deleted Sent, & Draft files that you suggested from Docand Settings/Administrator/App Data/Mozilla/Profiles/xxxxxx/bvbo2yzk.slt/mail/pop.pacbell.yahoo.com
Now I can't send messages and they won't save to draft.
Message when attempting to send: An error occured while
sending mail. The mail server responded: authentication required- for help go to http//help.yahoo.com/help/us/sbc/dsl/mail/pop/pop-11.html. Please verify that your email address is correct in your mail preferences and try again.
FYI, the mail server is set to: smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com
Addtional FYI: ISP was Pacbell, now SBCglobal DSL
FYI: also have file Netscape/Users/xxxxxx/mail. Draft & Sent files are .snm not .msf ???
    Would screen shots help?
    Thank you.
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

What we have here is a Server problem. This has been around for a couple of weeks, and supposedly SBC is working on the issue.

First of all, I checked the SBC site:
    http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/sbc/dsl/mail/pop/pop-11.html
and you do need authentication, so please re-enable in:
Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Outgoing Server (SMPT) settings.

A fix for this issue is included in Mozilla 1.7a which was released 2/23/04:
    http://www.mozilla.org/releases/
Otherwise, there don't seem to be workarounds from the SBC end that work for many users. Here is one workaround that has been offered, and may work for you:

This fix was reported on the SBC DSL Forum:
    Legacy SMTP Failures
In the Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings window that comes up:
change the server name from smtp.sbcglobal.net
    to
    smtpauth.sbcglobal.net
check the box "use name and password "
enter your full e-mail address (for example, "XXX@sbcglobal.net ") as the username.
    ---

You might like to read the Bug Report which discusses the issue and the Mozilla fix: Bug Report #232860

    Hi Ramona-
    Thanks for the info but.........
What does Mozilla do? Is it a portion of the operating system for Netscape? will downloading the fix cause more issues than good?
Is it your understanding via the Netscape instructions that you set the Server Name field to: "smtp.sbcglobal.net" even if my email address is member@pacbell.net???
Pacbell was purchased or merged with SBC as many other "bells" have. I still use my pacbell.net email address.
BTW - have had similar issues in the past. Spoke with Pacbell or SBC at the time. They had me change the @ symbol in varius places in the Account Settings to %, but not at others.
Also Account name included "pacbell.net on pop.pacbell.yahoo.com" ???? Your comments?
Since you have informed me this is an SBC issue, would you prefer I contact SBC for solutions???
Should I follow the Legacy SMTP Failure instructions also?
    Thanks for your responsiveness.
    Bill

    Bill,

What are the differeneces in Netscape 7 and Mozilla
Netscape 7.1 is based on Mozilla 1.4. Both applications share almost the identical features, such as tabbed browsing, custom keywords, and Sidebar. Exceptions are additions of proprietary features such as the support for Netscape WebMail and AOL mail. In general, Netscape 7 and Mozilla will display Web pages and read mail the same.
    ---

The "fix" is included in Mozilla 1.7a, the complete browser. Mozilla has no patches, as does IE/OE. A new version of Mozilla is released approximately every 3 to 4 months. You may, or may not know that Netscape 7 is now defunct, and Version 7.1 is the final Release. This is as of June 2003.

I was going on the information you gave me above, which you stated that Addtional FYI: ISP was Pacbell, now SBCglobal DSL. See this thread Can't Send on PacBell which has Server information.

This Newsgroup Thread is also related to your problem:
    snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/bvuh28$e256@ripley.netscape.com
You will see that this is from a pacbell user. The Mozilla Release mentioned is a nightly build, so the Mozilla 1.7a Official Release is the most current.

If I were you, I would either post your problem on the SBC Broadband Forum, or follow some of the threads dated around 2/5/04, in which many users like yourself report the same problem. If you choose not to use Mozilla 1.7a, which has addressed the SMTP/RFC issue, then, yes, you definitely need to contact SBC with this issue,
