Some time ago, Newt posted a fix for a problem that I had with Windows XP.

I find that I also have the same problem with my computer that uses Win98.

It had to do with getting Windows to retain each folder setting that I had chosen. It worked great on the XP machine and when I attempted to use the same instructions on the Win98 machine, I, of course don't have the exact keys in the Registry and am way too smart it attempt anything on my own.

I'm not sure how to direct this message to Newt and since he may not know the answer because this is a '98 issue, I was hoping someone could direct me to the correct procedure.

    Thanks.

    vegaspat,

Start > Settings > Folder Options
    Click on the 'View' tab
Place a check mark in 'Remember each folder's view settings'

I've already done that many times. It just doesn't work.

I found a fix in the XP forum but it doesn't seem to be the same thing that will work in 'Win98.

Thanks anyway. I appreciate the response

    vegaspat,

These are my settings in Folder Options. And, they DO work for me.

    General Tab:
    Custom, based on settings.........
    >Use Windows classic desktop
    >Open each folder in its own window
    >Only for folders..... "as Web Page" (View menu)
    >Single-click to open

    View Tab:
*The following are the ONLY ones I have ticked or checked*
    >Show all files
    >Remember each folder's view settings
    >Show file attributes in Detail View
    >Show window contents while dragging
    >Smooth edges of screen fonts

After you changed the settings as you want them, hold the CTRL key down, and then close Windows Explorer.

I tried all of the suggestions and nothing works.

I think the problem lies with having too many folders and Windows doesn't like that.

I'm not smart enough to figure out what area of the Registry I need to access to increase the number and was hoping that someone here already had the answer.

I know that was the issue with XP and I thought it might also be true for Win 98. Guess not.

Thanks again for all the help.

There is no solution for Win98/se like there is for XP.
Evidently, 98 has a set number of memories for this.
Furthermore the registry keys that control this have an
undocumented format so that programmers cannot try a fix.
Closest thing i have found is a program called ViewFix,
yet it is extreemly limited in what it can do. Then i found another
program called AutoSizer ... unfortunately .. it does not work.

    Thanks.

I probably created this problem myself. I rarely choose the default when installing a program. (C:\Programs)

I prefer to put each program, in most cases, in its own folder.

    Oh, well, I tried....

I do not think where you install things should make a difference. For example, my hard drive has four partitions. My C: has Windows, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, AVG and Kerio firewall.
Everything else is installed into either D:\Program Files or D:\Games.
I use my E: drive for a fixed Swapfile, Temp folder, and IE Temp files.
The F: I use for everything downloaded, and then run the installs from that partition.
I do not have any problems with any of my folders retaining settings in Windows Explorer, or in my My Documents shortcut on the Desktop.
My system runs great set up like this.

Yes, but I have EVERYTHING on my C drive and I do have many folders. Perhaps my computer just decided to act up.

With the registry edit, my XP folders options were corrected. It's just a shame that if that is the problem with the '98 system, it can't be rectified like that.

I really appreciate all the input that I've received on this issue.

    Thanks.

    Plansdowne,

Where did you pick up that information?

I printed off your suggestion and just got around to checking it out. I'm not POSTIVE at this point, but it seems to have worked. At least for the time being.

I would just be interested where you read about this because I have searched the Microsoft site and came up with NOTHING. Of course, everyone else seems to come up with better search results than I most of the time. Guess I give up too easily?

That solution is like putting lipstick on a pig.
I have several shortcuts to folders on my desktop and they WILL NOT remember what size to open.
Check/Uncheck .. don't matter, especially after using WE for navigating multiple folders.
They always revert back to the default size which is just large enuff to display about 6 large icons.
Anyone know of a way to change the default single pane size ?
