I recently adadpted my computer for a wireless connection. I needed a new DSL modem and a wireless router. When I am on my e-mail I can no longer disconnect from the internet without shutting down. Previously I could right click my modem icon and shut it off but leave the computer runnung. Not sure why this happened.

If you are connecting thru a router, the icon you see should be the network card rather than a modem.

Are there other PCs on a local network you need to stay connected with or is yours the only PC?

Go to control panel>network connections, right click>properties on current connection. Should be a box to check show icon in notification area when connected. Click ok and an icon should appear, which you can right click and disconnect.
