JimmyM--Are these rather small Red X's? And are these two sites the only ones with the problem? If so, try a right click on the X, then Show Pictures. Or click Refresh from the tool bar. It could just be a temporary server problem. There is often nothing more you can do about a server problem on a few sites.
However, I went to www.discovery.com and find that many images will not load unless ActiveX controls are permitted to run.
(You do that by IE Tools|internet Options|Security tab|Custom Level|set all ActiveX controls to Prompt (except those that are "Unsafe" which should stay at Disable).
And in place of any X, I get a small box with red, green and blue geometric shapes in it where pictures should be. This is typical of ActiveX disabling.
So your X's, especially if large, could be something else entirely.

thanks for your interest in my post, yes there small red x's in a little box and pretty much the only web sites that I have no pictures in, the graphics at other web sites are just fine. I do get a title of discovery.com at the top explore our web universe with a couple misc, all our tv schedules, discovery store, search, and a discovery channel store box at the right. I did check the security tab and seen that the active x box's are enabled with the exceptions of the one you suggested that are unsafe I changed them all to prompt and refreshed but still the same thing, it did ask to allow active x controlls to run but I still get the same as before.

Try adding that site to your trusted sites for long enough to do a little testing.

If it works OK then, you are looking at some security setting in the standard internet settings that is higher than the site wants.

Not sure what though since my browser set at standard Medium Security works fine with the site. If, after trying Trusted and having it work, you remove the site from your trusted list, set normal internet to medium, adn try again, do you still have the problem?

It just went to www.discovery.com and it requires Shockwave Flash plug-in. A big part of the page is in Flash.

Just thought I'll let you know. I don't know why you get the red x's.

    Discovery.com

On my comp, which is set with medium high security, I got 9 separate prompts to allow Active X. On my kids' comp, which is set to low security, has a zillion games I would never permit on mine, and is on dial up, the page displayed perfectly at first click, no prompts.

I still haven't any luck with getting discovey.com to work with the pictures or graphics, I did go to macromedia.com and loaded shockwave ok but the flash player wouldn't do anything when I clicked on the install button all it did was refresh the page, I also put discovery.com in the trusted sites and it didn't work for that either. Sorry if I'm a little ignorant on this subject is there any other things I may be able to try? I'm sure I'll get it figured out one day thanks so far for all of the suggestions, I hope I'll be able to post a reply with what was wrong.

Take a look Here to see if your flash player is working. There are 6 small animations with a title under each one. They should be active when you go to the page.

    PCPitstop's Actve X Test

There are suggestions for diagnosing and correcting problems on that page, too.

Newt, your link gave Norton a coronary, but I enjoyed reading the explanations of how each style was done. Thanks for posting that link!

noahdfear I ran both of the ununistall links first that you posted then hit the standalone installer link and it took right off I did it as a temp and not save it to disc to try and see if that would work, discovery.com came up and ran just fine with all of the pictures graphics etc so I did each of the uninstalls again this time I went back to macromedia.com and did the install from the web site and this time it worked, I really don't know why it wasn't working from there before, well anyway I have flash player installed now, thank you to everyone for their input and help all of the suggestions was greatly appreaciated :)

JimmyM - some times we have to go around the block a time or two but someone, somehow can usually get you to the correct address.

Johanna - I did that link from work so no Norton and it didn't light up anything on this box (TrendMicro AV and Black Ice firewall). But if I'd known it would drive Norton nuts, I'd have done it from home just for fun.

Anyway, glad to give you another distraction while the wrist thing is still bothering you some.
