Robert was running a game furnished CD in a Samsung 52X drive when He heard "loud pop ".

The CD had shattered into small pieces.

    How unusual is this?

It can happen, but is not a common occurrence - see the first post in this thread for an explanation .....

I guess the CD would probably have some incipient cracking around the centre for this to occur. Removing CD's from some proprietary cases - one's with the centre press release can be tricky and put unnecessary strain on the CD if you are not careful.
    Never bend them!

It happened to me. I've heard stories of pieces blowing right through the drive door! The recommendation is to pitch the drive. I emptied mine out and continued using it with no problem but that was in my "poor and naive" days. With quality burners going for $30, it's probably not worth risking any further CDs.

We're talking very high RPMs here, so the drive might even pose a danger.

I blame the CD, not the drive.

    Hello Lorenzo1,

I think your post about the CD being at fault might be right on. I just this PM watched a TV show where a couple of guys try to prove or disprove urban myths. Didn't see what myth they were working towards but they were testing CDs and how they responded at higher drive speeds. They shattered one that actually dented the sides of the CD drive case. A couple of others they were able to shatter at 52X? speed. I should note that most of the CDs they shattered were at speeds well above those we normally see in computers. Nevertheless, as speeds of drives increase, we may see more of that.
