When I open certain sites, http://www.tvguide.com for one, the page opens to source code view in IE6. This doesn't happen in Opera 7.

When I open some other sites, http://www.realarcade.com for one, I get a blank page.

Most sites work correctly. All sites work in Opera.

    Here's what I've tried:
    1- SFC /Scannow
2 - Safe mode with networking
    3 - Repair of Windows
    4 - Uninstall/Reinstall IE6
5 - Repair installation of Windows.
6 - Checked the Hosts file.
7 - Checked the Event logs.
8 - Done full scans for viruses and Trojans.
(Hijack This, Spybot, Spywareblaster, Ad-Aware, Norton 2004)

When I do offline downloads of the sites, they run fine from my hard drive.

    Thanks
    **************
IE6 - Latest as of today. Sun and Microsoft Java on the machine.
Windows XP PRO - all updates applied as of today.

Step through the fixes on this page, including running all the "regsvr32" commands you have to scroll down a little to see.

Thanks Miz. I'd already tried that, and a few other things I'd forgotten. My error.

I've been using Hijack This to check for BHOs, but I downloaded BHO demon, too. Nifty little program. Thanks again.

I did all the regsvr32 commands over, just to make sure.

If a Windows Repair install, an uninstall/reinstall IE6, and a safe boot launch didn't work. I'm at a loss.

I also tried IE6 at each stage of the WIndows Updates I had to reinstall due to the Repair installation of Windows.

Check the HOSTS file for the one's opening blank.

Thanks jenae and noahdfear, but no go. I checked the HOSTS and installed the latest shockwave.

Something else weird is happening. When I go to download some zip files, it will go to a blank page with the correct URL in the address field, but no download. When I copy the URL from the address field, http://xxx.xxx.com/xxx.zip, and copy it to FlashGet, it downloads index.html.

Again, this operation works correctly in Opera, including the cut and paste to FlashGet.

Sorry about the delay in answering. I was away.

    Thanks all.

    IE6 is my default browser.

The source code displays in the browser. Notepad isn't involved.

Yes, I did post this question earlier, and ended by making Opera my default browser and swearing not to use IE6. Unfortunately, there are too many sites that refuse to work without IE6. I would like to use it as my secondary browser. I changed it back to my default browser because of this problem. I couldn't find my original thread when I looked, so I reposted without referencing it. Sorry.

That URL was just an example.

How do I get a log? I tried to use HTTP look, but IE6 doesn't seem to register on it. It picks up my FlashGet downloads and my Weather updates, so I know it's working.

You have tried the obvious ..if flashget is in the tray right click
    and turn off browser monitoring

You mentioned hijackthis so I assume you already know how to post its log,, though it seams spyware might be a long shot in this case :)

I've tried safe booting, which would eliminate FlashGet. I just tried disabling browser and clipboard monitoring, anyway, with no effect.

Hijack This doesn't find anything. The log would be blank. Norton doesn't find any viruses. Ad-Aware and Spybot don't find anything. All the above programs are working with the latest definitions.

I'm beginning to see no way around this but reformat and start from scratch. I'm not going to do that, but I am thinking of giving up and living with not being able to reach those sites, and waiting for something headwhackingly obvious to pop up and rescue me.

Anyway, thanks for all the help so far, everyone.

Here's some strange stuff. I think it has something to do with ASP pages.

I installed FastBrowser. It opens http://www.realarcade.com perfectly. When it tries to open http://www.tvguide.com/index.asp it pops up the download save/open dialog.

The ASP file type is set to open with Dreamweaver.

IE6 still handles the two sites as already stated.

    " "Hijack This doesn't find anything." "

what ? if you mean you have excluded things known to be safe and know that theres a problem theres nothing new, you should still unexclude them and post the log

Thanks Lonny. That made too much sense for me to think of it. I cut out the running processes because of message length. I'll post it separately.

With all that start up list loading at boot, it's amazing it doesn't take 10 minutes! Most of that does NOT need load at start up, and could be hogging resources your comp could use elsewhere. If I were you, I would download and install this simple freebie, Mike Lin's Start Up after I shut off everything I could from the start up from within the programs themselves. Leave Windows and Symantec alone- everything else is a judgement call. I see a dozen I would zap right off without further ado!

Of course, this does not address the original problem, but it can't hurt to narrow that boot list down, if only for diagnostics.

Yes, Johanna, I'm guilty, but it's not as bad as it looks. I don't notice much slowdown in the boot process, but I leave the computer on all the time, and only reboot when a configuration change makes it necessary. I do see a couple that I can prune, though.

    Thank you.

    WoW what a log :D
I aggree,, start with only the basics,, and see if the problem still exists

I am not an expert log reader ,, and your os is unfamilur to me..

    I will say this
    what is this >>O4 - Global Startup: StartSort.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe

and this program I have found ,but is not popular at all
    O4 - Global Startup: Registry Firewall.lnk = D:\Program Files\Registry Firewall\RegFirewall.exe
If it was a lagit and helpfull app we would see it more often in other logs , beside I thought Norton had a registry checker/protector

You have an exceptional/excessive amout of tool's, buttons and well plugins, not to mention source views and pdf etc etc etc

besides trimming what starts with windows ,,disable or uninstall the programs that have tools and BHO's,, any plugins to IE

Ive have had IE get confused with only a couple buttons

    Regards
    Lonny

O4 - Global Startup: StartSort.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe runs this batch file at Windows startup:

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder]

The result is that your Start/Programs are always alphabetically sorted.

You and Johanna are making sense to me. I'll start taking out, one by one, the BHOs and other 3rd party stuff that I have in IE6.

Registry Firewall was only running because I wanted to see what it did. It's on its way out.

Thanks, I'll let you know the results.
