Search window won't come up in XPpro. I click on start, search and start button stays depressed , machine freezes ( cursor still moves but does nothing) after a bit , start
button pops back up and machine is normal. This was a legal upgrade over win2k a few days ago. First time I tried to use search, very strange. Any thoughts?

    Hi Robrent
    Welcome to the boards!
Can you give us a few system specs?
Perhaps something to try: Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Double click Services and find the Indexing Service. Double click/properties/Stop. From the Status Type Box, select Disabled.

Hi, Daisy great to hear from you again, I used to be on this forum appears I have lost any reference to those previous posts. This shows the problems with upgrades, even from 2k to XP. Could be corrupted Win\Inf .

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders.

    Hi Robrent,

    This may help, also ...

If you have TweakUI 1.33 installed with XP, the "Search Results" box on Tweak's Desktop tab must be checked for the Search Companion to work properly.

Thanks for your respective efforts. The machine is one I built, P4 2.6 hyperthreading chip/800fsb ecs board/1 gig ram/ XP pro.
/ Maxtor drives. I formatted a new drive with maxblast sftwr. and clean installed win2k since I have the cd, then installed over this an "upgrade only" xp pro using the cd. I thought it would be pretty clean since the win 2k was a clean install.
Daizy, on the indexing properties "general" tab startup type is already disabeled and the stop button is greyed out.
Jenae, I find srchasst in WINNT, right clicking brings up a menu that doesn't show install on it. I assume that means it's already there.
I also have a boatload of microsoft patches that I installed from their site after the original installs seemed ok.
    Jim , where
do get the tweakui, there are so many of them.
    Thanks again for the efforts.

    Robrent ...

    Re TweakUI:

The XP version, 2.1, is available here. Third one down on the right side.

TweakUI 1.33 also works with WinXP, and co-exists with the XP versions very nicely. Each has features that the other doesn't.
