We have a computer running Windows 2000 and Office XP which is having a weird problem. When you right-click on a file and send to a mail recipient, the first file sends fine. However, if you try this again before logging out of Windows, when you click the TO button to go to the address book, explorer.exe crashes and Outlook hangs until you end the task. After you do, it works fine the next time, but does the same thing if you try to send another one. Our user who is having this problem does not like any of the other ways of performing this task and wants us to fix it. This problem occurs for all users on this machine.

I have installed all the latest patches and service packs. I've tried uninstalling Office and re-installing. I have ran sfc /scannow, regclean, and have tried repairing both Windows and Office. I have ran chkdsk and found nothing wrong. I have also defragged the machine. The machine has 512MB of memory. I test the cards to make sure they weren't bad. I removed and re-added the swap file. Nothing seems to make a difference.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Ken and welcome.

Have you checked the event logs on the PC for warnings/errors that might give details on possible causes?

Yes. The only error is the normal Event ID 1002 saying "The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.Exe was restarted." which isn't very helpful.

Some of the other bits might help as well. Please post the whole thing. Easiest way is to open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows (sends a text copy to your clipboard) and paste the results here.

What sort of network? Domain or workgroup? If domain, AD or NT classic? Any Novell stuff running?

And as an outside chance, reboot to get a clean start and check the permissions and status of the temp folder. Do a couple 'send to' operations to hang the system and recheck the temp folder. Especially look to see if it has been set to 'read only'.

Do the same check for the address book file and the folder it resides in.
