It would be most useful to know the function of each and every file in Windows 98 (my particular system) or at least the more important ones like those ending in .sys and ini .. Do you know of any website which does this, together with perhaps a description of the lesser known but more important 3 letter extensions e.g. cab? I am not suggesting a full explanation, simply a one or two line description of its purpose. e.g This xxxxx.dll file ensures correct timing when printer is spooled…
    Thankyou in advance,
    Pat Alley

Hi Pat - Welcome to the Board :)

This site lists all file extensions known to man :D

BTW - .sys - system file, .ini - initiation/configuration file, .cab - cabinet file, essentially a compressed folder generally used to house installation files.

PeteC's suggestion will tell you what each file extension means. If you want to know what the specific file does, run a search on www.google.com. You can also get a little (very little) info on a specific file by right clicking|clicking Properties|and if you see a Version tab, see what info is there.
