Hello, is there anyone know how to display file size in BYTES in Windows Explorer? I know right clicking a file and select "Properties" can do, but I wish I can see all files showing their sizes in BYTES (by default) when I use Windows Explorer. I don't want it showing KB, MB, GB, TB, etc.

I used to use DOS a lot ten years ago and the BYTES representation is actually better than showing rounded up to its '000 as I can see files of similar size are identical and all sorts of other things, by looking at the exact file size.

I also think that by rounding up to '000, Windows has to sort of "calculate" and process all the files in order to determine if it should display KB, MB or GB. So, I want a little faster as I always got over ten thousand files in a folder and it takes tens of seconds to display them all. Yes, the info will be cached, but such cache will be gone after each reboot.

I searched through the registry but there is nowhere I know that it can do that. Anyone can help? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!!

    Felix

I seriously doubt you will notice any difference in speed for WE to diplay your files just by eliminating the "rounding" of file sizes. However, I have searched the Tweak sites anyway, but came up empty. I can't find a way to get XP WE to display file sizes in bytes by default. If you do find the tweak, please post it here. I cannot see any benefit or reason to do this, but am interested to know if and how it can be done. Good luck.

I thought this sounded like something an enterprising software writer might be willing to tackle. So, I just sent an email to Mike Lin, who's written many small, helpful apps for the PC, asking if he knew of, or thought it might be possible to write, a tweak that would force WE to display file sizes in bytes, rather than rounding them.

I'll post back when (or if) I receive an answer.

Thank you both Johanna and Jim for your input. I have too searched all over the tweak sites, have asked many experts on the net, and tried out many freeware registry tweaking tools but came up no solution for this.

Mainly I am an administrator of user computers and servers, many times I have to check whether or not we have duplicate files, modified files, check with file versions and stuff like that. That's why it is essential (and easier) for me to do the checking with tens of thousand of files each day.

You might also know that one significant performance tweak is the MOUSE SHADOW. It may look simple and sometimes provides people some visual comfort with the mouse shadow, but for many computers, if we disable the mouse shadow, performance increases significantly and reduces memory usage (they call it a resource hog). This is the one tweak that I use most on user workstations. For people who use computers for work, they don't notice much difference visually (they just point and click), but with this tweak, it smooths computer performance.

    Thank you for your feedback!!

Mouse Shadow? I've never heard of it. How do you turn it off?

About the mouse shadow, you can see many sites recommended XP users who seek performance increase and reduce memory usage by disabling it. If you also use Virtual PC for testing stuff, the original creator company Connectix (now acquired by Microsoft), has also recommended to disable the mouse shadow if users find using Virtual PC slow.

Well, you can disable the mouse shadow from (Windows XP Professional Edition):

Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced (TAB) -> in "Performance" click Settings -> in Visual Effects (TAB), uncheck "Show shadows under mouse pointer" -> OK

    This will do.

But if you look for simple performance tweak, tweak in this Visual Effects menu and tryout what Microsoft has the default settings for both "Best Appearance" and "Best Performance ". They are in contrast with each other. That means, the more visual effects, the more resources it takes.

With this Visual Effects performance tweak, you will not mess up your operating system. Registry tweaks are more tricky and dangerous. But if you look for some performance gain, disable all visual effects. Really, in an operational sense, nothing is compromised except the eye candy.

Gotcha. Mouse shadows was one of the things I disabled when I first installed XP Pro, and I haven't given it a thought (nor have I seen it mentioned) since then. With a GB of RAM, resources aren't something I need to think about very often, and performance has never been a problem.

Okayman - first off, welcome to the forum.

Maybe spending $27 for This would make your life a bit simpler? It will do the comparisions and report in CSV format so you can stuff the results into a spread sheet or dB and figure out where you stand.
