    I reinstalled w98 on my wife's workstation over the weekend. It had on it before this a game (Disney Interactive's "Ariel's Story Studio) which I'd installed the week before.

    But yesterday I tried reinstalling it and it won't go in. It gets to a certain point and then says an error occured and shuts down. Other games have installed w/ no problem, in fact I have no other problems on that machine afaik.

    I did interrupt the first time I installed it, quitting the install so I could change the installation path. But since I've uninstalled and also removed whatever I could find in the registry -- one entry is all.

    Geez I'd hate to reinstall the OS just for this...

    Does any of these topics offer help:

    http://asp.interactive.go.com/support/disney/tech/issues.asp

    well shoot....
    I had this filled out with apropo nfo but this support search engine is java scripted and ran. You'll have to jump thru the hoops as I did by entering your
    1st Field=OS win98
    2nd Field=scrolling to and entering the category of Game Setup (install, uninstall blah blah)
    3rd Field Scrolling down to the Little Mermaid section and picking Ariels Story Studio
    4th Field I left blank

    Hit enter and read away.....

    Nice to know they have this, unfortunately my error
    -- pgm performed illegal operation and will be shut down --
    during install isn't in there.

    pgm?

    Is this an exact quote of the error?
    Can you click on the Details button for a more informative error?
    Was this error captured in your faultlog.txt?

    ========
    During install and uninstall have you shutdown everything with the exceptions of systray and explorer? Have you rebooted between the two Processes?

    During your cleanup of the first installation have you included emptying c:\windows\temp and your recycle bin? Deleted any folders or files left pertaining to Ariel whatever?

    ===========
    You may never find your Exact Error. Many are user specific. All you can do is use any of the tips and tshoots offered by the list of support site topics.

    ==============
    I didn't spend any time at this site as you have described yourself as experienced, I figured you could fly by the seat of your pants as well as I could.

    Perhaps there is a patch or update offered somewhere in there.

    ========
    This appears to be an older CD and will probably require some watching during the install. If you've kept up with your updates it may attempt to overwrite your newer files with older. I believe I noticed references to quicktime, directx and possibly acrobat reader, There may be others. Well behaved install packages will check your version first and will not overwrite but it's them older fussy buggers that can get ya'. If this has a custom install you may want to check this out and exclude those options you do not need.

    I also noticed this is CD interactive, it may not be wise to over ride the default install paths or the paths the CD wants to install to especially if you have previously installed this. Even though you have cleaned your registry as best as you could you can never be sure something isn't still hiding in there.

    ========
    There's a thought....
    Try a registry backup that was dated before this cd was installed.

    You should delete all files and folders located in C:\Windows\Temp. Numerous attempts to install may have left a mess of them, and they can interfere.

    Where did you go Marty? Did you get this smoothed out or did that Little Ole' Mermaid do you in. :)
