My mail as always worked just fine until a few days ago. I feel that I recieve a dozen email that look like had virus attackments. I deleted all messages and did not open attackments. But since then when I ask to get new messages I get a alert that says " Unable to write the email to the mailbox. Make sure the file system allows you write privileges, and you have enough disk space to copy mailbox. " I have enough disk space on drive. I have check settings and can not see anything wrong. I seem to be able to send mail.

    Welcome to the Forum, rksnc!

    Hi rksnc,

Have you run a virus scan on your system since you deleted the suspicious email?

The error you are receiving is most common when having copied Mail files from a CD backup, and the file attributes are marked "Read only ". Check your file attributes to ensure they are not "Read only ".

Also, with Netscape and Quick Launch closed, navigate to your Mail Account folder, and delete the Inbox.msf file. Don't delete the Inbox file without the msf extension, as it contains your mail.

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

    Can't download mail

I have ran two different virus scans. Trend Micro And McAfee. They do not find any viruses. I can not see any files you spoke about inbox.msf. I have look at all files that I can see and all are not check read only. I have notice if off line and try to download mail it just times out but when online , that is when the alert pops up. I can go to bellsouth home page and get mail still. But hate not being able to get mail as i always have with netscape.

    rksnc,

If you run Windows XP those files are hidden:
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

    Now delete the Inbox.msf file.

When in your Webmail, delete all Spam, and see if that helps.

Yes I had box uncheck to show hiden folders. I notice that I was looking in the wrong place. I found the inbox.msf folder and deleted it. The mail will work. And when I check the mail I see the same strange mail again. It will appear as return mail. One of the email addresses I know. It will have 1 to 3 attackments that I do not click on. There will be a .Fwd:,eml--.eml---!cid-006101c1792a$e3927c60...---. I notice when I see the last there, that there is a little devil at the bottom of message. I again went back to folders and deleted .msf folder. And when I went back to mail there they were again. Sorry if I seem slow here but I have never seen this before. I have ran virus scan again and it always comes up clean.
    Thanks
    Ricky

    Ricky,

Do you have spyware detection applications installed? If not install AdAware and SpyBot, and run both of them. Both applications are freeware.

When you delete the messages, also compact the folders before closing Netscape. If this doesn't work, then try deleting the mail on the server.

You can also try moving all your "good" messages to a temporary folder, then with Netscape closed, delete both the Inbox and Inbox.msf files. They will be rebuilt when Netscape is run again.

What is the "little devil" at the bottom of the email you mentioned? Is there any content to the message, other than the devil image? That sounds really suspicious to me..... What are the attachment file extensions, are they .bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip?

    Downloading email

There were no ext. other than what I wrote last time. Yes I have both spyware programs and have ran them. I remove the msf folders and downloaded mail again. The same one came back. I deleted them and empty trash. Then I went back to mail folder and move inbox folder and erase the msf folders. The mail seem to be working now. I have not moved the folder back or should I say copy folder back to the new folder yet. At this time it seems to be working okay. I just don't know if I can or will okay when I try to move it back. Oh yea the devil doesn't always appear in each mail. But the thing that brothers me is that when I see the mail it will not apply to sender or subject line. It always appears to be a forwarded mail. But your help has been helpful. Let me know what you think about this now.

    Ricky,

Close Netscape, then copy the Inbox file without the MSF extension into the Mail Account folder.

NOTE: this file will replace any existing Mail in the newly created Mail folder. You may first want to rename the Mail files, e.g., rename Inbox to OldInbox, The renamed file will appear in the Netscape Mail. This will ensure that you lose no existing mail.

    Did you compact your folders?

    It Works Again

I open the mail again, deleted the mail that was giving me the problem. Then I removed the inbox folder to desk top. I then deleted the msf. folders. I close every thing down and reopen mail and let it rebuild folders. It now works. I then rename old folder to old inbox and put back in. I was able to reopen the old mail without anymore problems. And yes I have compact folder. Thanks everything seems to be okay now.
