Is there a faster way to edit the startup list than clicking on each, "Remove from this list" and one at a time?

You could go into Documents and settings, your username (or all users if you want it to affect all), start menu folder and remove the shortcuts.

I went to where you said (I thnk) and found several listed but not the ones that show up in the recently used apps at the bottom of the start menu that shows up on the left when clicking on start.

Well, I had hoped that using Regseeker to clean the StreamMRU/stream keys would do it, but it didn't. So I went snooping around the registry. I haven't found a way to pick and choose what is in that Most Recently Used list, but I did find a way to remove it completely (at least nothing has come back since I did this). If interested, go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Micrsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced. In the right pane locate and modify Start_MinMFU to a value of zero. Close and reboot.

I'll keep looking for a way to just clear it if this isn't what you want to do. :)

Go to the taskbar, right click, choose properties, start menu, customize>general. If you want those recently used programs not to display, choose 0 for number to display, and if you just want to clear the list, there is a button for that, too. There are more options available under the advanced tab. Or did I completely misunderstand the question?

Follow Johanna's Advice. Then Start\Run\Regedit\H_KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. Create this new key type it exactly as it is typed here NoStartMenuMFUprogramslist. Set the call for attributes to 1. This is a REG_DWORD Value so after you modify it should look like this 0x00000001 (1). Hope this is what you want.

These were not the answers to what I asked but they do solve the main problem. I had a list of probably 20 apps there. By setting the max to 6 and reducing the size of the icons, I can see them all and removing only 6 is not a big deal.

    thanks all !:D
