System info: xp pro sp1 (all security patches, no windows update patches). ATI Radeon 9600xt video card, soundblaster live sound card, 2.6c P4 800fsb CPU, Corsair XMS 3200 RAM, maxtor 80gig hard drive, verbatim cdrw drive, gigabyte motherboard. Everything is fairly new and has run perfect in the past

Last night, while downloading files and surfing the internet, my computer rebooted. I just did a fresh install of XP earlier that day too! I checked event viewer and found this:

I searched Microsoft's knowledge base on stop code 0x000000d1 and found the following.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314908&Product=winxp

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317326&Product=winxp

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810980&Product=winxp

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319870&Product=winxp

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308362&Product=winxp

The problem is, none of those codes match my bugcheck code exactly. And I never got a blue screen of death. Any ideas? I'm using all official drivers for my componenets (soundcard, videocard)

    Thanks

Hi Stabber. You really need to get a BSOD to get details of the failure. By default, XP sets itself up on install to reboot when it runs into a bad error. I suppose because the BSOD might scare new users. Not good for diagnostics though.

    Right-click My Computer
    Advanced~Startup & Recovery settings button
    Uncheck the Automatically Restart block

If it happens again you'll get all the detail needed to track down the problem.

thanks man, I really dont like XP (2000pro is better to me) but I have to use it if I want the hyper threading

I also did all the patches on windows update, some of them were related to USB problems ( i have a ton of usb stuff). Hopefully this was the key.

    Thanks

Turning off that default auto restart feature is one of the first things I do when I do an install. I have seen computers locked in reboot loops that Mr. Gates himself, probably couldn't interrupt. Like Newt pointed out, you need the error message to solve the problem, anyway.

Stabber - it'll grow on you. Like a fungus, sorta. :D

Truth be told, I've used them all DOS 3.x thru XP-pro (not home though) and now I get a little frustrated when I have to go back and work with a 2K machine.

My next project will be setting my main home PC to dual boot XP-pro and 2003 which, hopefully, I'll also like.
