I've lost the use of the "forward" feature in Netscape 4.7 Messenger. Any idea how to fix it?

A few years ago, when I had a problem with Messenger, Sympatico (my ISP) had me re-install the software. I certainly don't want to do that. I'd rather just copy and paste the message and send that way. Netscape is part of the ISP disc provided when hooking up with Sympatico and their solution to many problems is to put the disc in and start over.

Thanks. I have another question, but will put it into a new thread.

    Hi Pat,

    Try this first:
    Close Communicator
    Open Windows Explorer
    Navigate to your Mail folder
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\username\Mail

Delete all files with an SNM extension. Only those files, as the the files without the SNM extension contain your Mail.
Also delete the popstate.dat file which is located in the Mail folder.
    Start Netscape
    Can you forward Mail?

    If no joy:
    Close Communicator
    Delete nsreg.dat
The file is located in C:\WINDOWS
When Netscape is restarted, you will get a prompt to create a new Profile. Enter the existing Profile name.

    You will get another prompt:

The directory you specified appears to already contain profile data. Would you like to use profile data that already exists in this directory?
    Answer YES

Let us know if any of the above allows you to forward Mail.

Yes, I'll do this as soon as I get a bit of "undistrubed" time, when someone is not ruining my concentration. :)

Thanks. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I completed the first part. Being afraid to delete things incase it causes problems, I copied the SNM and popstate.dat files to a spot I keep for the purpose called "Holding Tank ". I always figure I can put them back if necessary, although recycle bin is always there too.

You should have warned me. :) Panicsville when I restarted Netscape and went to "get message ". 66 messages downloaded. They were all the same ones that I had already received over a period of time, so I deleted all but a few of them again.

    That method didn't work.

The next step you show is to delete nsreg.dat. I found the file, but first I went to control panel and looked at "users" and checked my name there, which is just "Pat" as you see here. Is that the only name required when prompted to create a new profile? Will there be any other information required than just that name? I don't want to delete an important file if I can't follow through.

    Computers..computers....argh! :)

Hi! I still haven't tried that second part of your message. I'd still like to know if my name Pat is all that will be required for the prompt to create a new profile?

    Thanks.

    Pat,

Yes, the folder that you see here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\Pat

    You can also check here:
Start | Programs | Netscape | Communicator | Utilities | User Profile Manager

O.K. I'll give it a shot tomorrow and hope for the best. If it doesn't work, I'll just keep copying and pasting into new messages. With computers, there's usually a way around things. :)

    Thank you.

Today I tried the nsreg.dat procedure. To begin with, I couldn't find the file in any of the places that we expected it to be.

I went into "find files" and it came up. I clicked on it to open and see where it went, and a box came up saying "You have chosen to download a file from this location. Do you wish to...open.....save, etc. I think you know the box I am talking about.

What was that? This is not fun.:(

    Pat,

Don't try to open the nsreg.dat file. Just delete it.

Ensure that Netscape is closed before deleting nsreg.dat. The file is located in C:\WINDOWS. I think you're making this harder than it really is.

Delete the nsreg.dat file, then start Netscape. When the Profile Manager prompts for a new Profile name, type in "Pat ". That's all you have to do.

That was scary. After deleting nsreg.dat and starting Communicator, I clicked on new prolfile, but "Pat" didn't work. It did not say that the profile data already exists, but started me right out from the beginning again. I couldn't get on line, other than the Sympatico assistant to get set up.

As I didn't want to start registering all over again, and don't really know the answer to all those prompts, I closed Communicator again and restored the file from the recycle bin. That, obviously, got me back here.

I guess I had just better just leave it alone. It is better than not being able to get on line.

Thanks for all your trouble trying to fix this for me. That is all we can do, try. :)

    Hi Pat,

    Happy Valentine's Day!

O.K., you can do this, and perhaps I should have started with the basics.

Since you're already spooked, with Netscape closed:
    rename nsreg.dat to Xnsreg.dat
    Next:
Start | Programs | Netscape Communicator | Utilities | User Profile Manager
1st Screen - will show no data, so click on New
    2nd Screen - Click Next
3rd Screen - you will enter Pat Boden (or whatever name you want your recipients to see)
    and your email address
4th Screen - enter your user name Pat
5th Screen - Click on YES

See this Screen Shot of Screens 4 and 5.

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

"Your registration to the Sympatico registration server closed before you finished an account. If you exited the Sympatico registration server before you were finished creating an account you can reconnect to the server by launching the Sympatico Assistant from the Sympatico folder.

If the Sympatico assistant wasn't able to establish a connection with the Sympatico registration server, make sure your modem is installed properly, connected and turned on, "................etc. etc.

This is the screen I get at about page 4. I fill in what they ask and then it goes to a dial up screen, the modem dails, then the above screen comes up.

I finally found that nsreg.dat file in Windows. I renamed the file from the "find files box ". When the new registration failed, I tried to rename it back again to nsreg.dat, but, a box came up saying that there was already a file by that name.

Is is because I renamed the file while in the "find files" box, instead of in Windows? I'm glad it was, though, as I was able to get back on line.

I think we should just forget this entirely. My version 4.7, with Sympatico as my ISP, just isn't showing the same screens as you are showing me.

Going to start, programs doesn't show me the Netscape file, but Sympatico. Beside that is the Netscape info, but oddly enough, not Netscape Communicator. Utilities, however was there.

    Thank goodness I got back.

    Hi Pat,

O.K., your ISP has Communicator all tied up in its Registration process. You should call them and have their Tech talk you through fixing your "Forward" problem.

From the error you posted, it would seem that you can't change anything in the application without having to go through your ISP's registration process.

Yes. I had called them before I read this post as I am unable to use my e-mail.

They re-registered me, but I have lost everything in my e-mail, all my folders, e-mails, address book, etc.

I do have the nsreg.dat file, but renamed Xnsreg.dat, which I saved in my "Holding Tank ". Can I, somehow, get all my information back using that file. Oddly enough, when I went into Windows, although I had renamed nsreg.dat file (in the "find files' box} to Xnsreg.dat. it still was in Windows as nsreg.dat.

I hope my e-mail address is the same. I'm waiting for a rather important message.

    Frustrating computers.

    Hi Pat,

The nsreg.dat file is your Netscape Communicator Registry. When you have problems, deleting this file almost always corrects the issue. Once deleted, Netscape rebuilds the file the next time it is started. That's why you have a C:\WINDOWS\nsreg.dat file.

To restore the renamed Xnsreg.dat you wil need to rename the existing C:\WINDOWS\nsreg.dat file. Try Znsreg.dat. Next: rename the Xnsreg.dat file to its original name: nsreg.dat. Place it back in C:\WINDOWS.

Have you looked in your C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users folder to see if your Mail files are there? You can open your Inbox with Notepad or Wordpad (without the snm extension) to see your Mail.

Yes. I had thought that maybe I could do something like that. There is nothing to lose now as I have lost it all. It also dawned on me that all the mail filters that I painstakingly put into my e-mail program, are gone also. If that file is put back into my "new" profile, will all those things be restored to where they were? (I should be so lucky.:) )

The "Xnreg.dat" file which I have in my "Holding Tank" is only 23kb. That doesn't sound right??? I wish I had deleted the file instead, then it would have been in the Recycle Bin to restore. Ah well.....

When I came into this forum tonight, a notice flashed on the screen that I had 1 private new message. At the bottom of the page, it said that I had 1 message in my folder. I clicked on it, and it disappeared. Was there a message? What did I do wrong?

    Pat,

You shouldn't have lost anything. When you look in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\pat\Mail. Your Mail files should be there. Your Mail filters are contained in the rules.dat file.

To view a Personal Message click on the "user cp" tab at the top of the page. Once there, click on "Personal Messages ".

The nsreg.dat file size sounds about right to me.

Thanks. I see the mail files. Can those files be switched with the new profile.? I haven't tried putting the saved nsreg.dat file into the new profile yet. I see there are 2 profiles now listed. One is called 00 and the other 01. The new one is 01.

If I upgraded Netscape, which version would you recommend? Would by mail files change? (not that it makes much difference at this point.) The version I have now is on a disc supplied by Sympatico, and if I have to do any re-installing, I have the disk. If I go to a newer version, I won't have the disc.

I received your private message. You weren't to know that Sympatico alters the situation.

Thanks. I'll hang on another day before trying that nsreg.dat change.

    Hi Pat,

I think your questions about installing another version of Netscape, should be addressed to your ISP.

Your Mail files can be copied to the new Profile. Copy only the files without the SNM extension. If you are already receiving Mail in the new Profile, then you will want to change the name of the Mail files in the old Profile, i.e., OldInbox, OldSent, etc. Otherrwise they will overwrite your existing Mail. Copy the rules.dat file and let it overwrite the rules.dat file in the new Profile.

There is nothing in my new mail that has to be kept. All the mail has been spam, which has been deleted, and 1 test e-mail I sent myself, so overwriting would be O.K.

Looking at these mail files, and folders, including the SNM files, some of which are folders in which I have mailed saved, I am wondering about renaming the new inbox folder, and then copying the old inbox folder to that location. The inbox is the place where I put all the subfolders that store mail that I want to keep. They are cleaned out regularly as the subject is no longer needed.

Also, why not rename the new "sent" folder and substitute the old "sent" folder?

Looking at the files and folders just sitting there, I wonder if I can copy the whole thing to the new user?

I haven't made any changes yet as I want to be absolutely sure that I know what I am doing this time, before I mess it up again. :)

Thanks for your patience and knowledge.

    Pat
