I did a search but did see anything that has to do with w2k and XP.

I have w2k installed now and i want to install XP but on another hard drive, i dont want to partition the w2k drive and put XP on the so i got another drive.

i'm going to istall the second drive as a slave.

When i boot from the XP disk will it see BOTH hard drives? Will it recognise the w2k is on the first disk and that there is another disk for it to go on? Is it like win98 where it HAS to be on first?

    any help would be great!!!

Yes, the XP install will see all hard drives and will recognize that Windows 2000 (or any other Windows OS) is installed. Just point the install to your second hard drive and XP will be installed on there. The only thing on your first drive that will be chnaged is the boot.ini file which is in the root of your C: drive. XP's setup will modify this to make your system dual bootable which means a menu will come up after the BIOS initializes asking you to choose which OS you want to boot into.

As far as which OS needs to be installed first, the quick rule of thumb is always install the newest OS last. If you install XP before 2000, you would not be able to dual boot.

Could I please intrude and enquire for myself.

I am currently running XP home ....see sig. below.

I have installed my previous hard drive with Win 98 as the slave on the primary, Xp being the Master

In wanting to have both systems independant of each other I ASSUMED( incorrectly it seems) that by changing this setup and running both as Masters..the XP off the primary and the Win98 off the secondary that I would acheive my aims.

This has not worked...is there someone who can brief me in simple detailed terms just what is required and also the + and - of going this route.

p.s. From what I've picked up from the posting it seems that I have gone about things in reverse in that I've had XP installed ....then added my hard drive with 98 when it should have been the other way round.
If such is the case how do I handle the procedure without losing the content of and on my XP drive???

    Thanking you
