I have just switched to XP Office (2002) from Office 1997 and am encountering a problem I never had with the old Office. I can copy a portion of an Excel spreadsheet successfully into WORD (with gridlines), but when I print, the gridlines are not printed. This is not a printer specific problem. The "print gridlines" box is checked in EXCEL. Any advice on how to get the gridlines printed would be welcome.

If you print the same section directly from Excel, do you get the gridlines on the printed output?

I just did a little testing.

    Copy from excel and

    - paste to word = no grid lines
    - paste as chart = gridlines
    - paste as .bmp = gridlines (but hogs lots of space for no good reason)
    - paste as picture = gridlines and the least size increase in the word doc
    - paste as enhanced metafile picture = gridlines

I didn't try with the excel piece as a live link but my guess is that would work as well.

The .bmp option not only increased the size of the word doc more than the other options but also gave by far the poorest rendering of the spreadsheet piece. Mostly it left the outer border no darker than the internal gridlines so not nearly as easy to read.

I just did that in Office XP (2002).

I created the grid lines in Excel and did a copy/paste into Word. On the screen all columns but the left-most are black. The left-most is grey.
It prints the black grid lines but not the grey ones.

In Word, after marking the area of the spread sheet, I recreated the grid lines and on the next attempt, all of them were printed.

Many thanks to both of you. I will try it tomorrow at the lab and see how it goes.

I used the Insert -> Object -> Excel chart function and it did print. But what an onerous way to get a spreadsheet into Word. I hardly think this is an improvement. Thank you for the guidance.
