How to I disable Microsoft Messenger Service. OR should I?

I understand that it allows messaged between computers on a network and I think I am getting some thru my cable network that I don't think are legitimately from Microsoft.

Start>run, type services.msc. Locate messenger in the list, right click>properties and select disable from the drop down.

Went back to noahdfear's suggestion and looked a bit closer.

    Ran Start>run, type services.msc

I changed to properties from "automatic" to "disabled ". That was the item I should have saved. Perhaps that is what was meant.

The discussion seems to be about two totally separate things.

"Messenger Service" is an internal messaging service mostly of use in the corporate environment. The IT guy can sit in the server room and use Messenger Service to tell his users on the 25th floor the servers will be down for maintainence. Naturally, spammers have learned how to exploit it so either run a firewall or disable the service...preferably both.

"Windows Messenger" is the version of MSN Messenger that comes with XP.

MESSENGER SERVICE is the one that I meant. I have been getting large grey message boxes that refer to a virus or worm that I should beware of. It appears to come from someone on my network. My only network is the one that is my cable company ISP. I do not respond to requests to click to download the fix from Microsoft. I do, however, check on the MS real site to download these fixes.

If you followed Noahdfear's advice (second post) that should resolve your problem. The long way to get there is Admin Tools>Services and scroll down the list. While you are in there, you might want to have a look at Black Viper for choosing your optimal settings for all the services listed. It is a comprehensive and accurate summary of the different services, explanations of what they are for, and suggestions for how to set them to meet your needs.

I disabled messenger in I.E and O.E. and used a small little utility to disable windows messenger service. (Can toggle it on or off).
But I'm still confused. I have listed in task manager MSMSGS.exe
and sometimes my firewall ZA shows messenger.exe listening to ports. Do I need to stop all access to internet? Will this muck anything up? This program seems to be so stubborn about wanting to run!

Have a look in this thread which discusses the aspects of Windows Messenger. I´m sure You´ll find a few answers there.

Here You´ll find a possible/probable solution. Unfortunately, it is based on hindsight ...... ...... and may be difficult to acchieve.

ten-bob--As far as the SERVICES settings on Win Xp to

    http://members.internettrash.com/megapolon/winxptweak.html
    Windows XP Services Tweaf Guide

    And

    http://www.blackviper.com/

    Black Viper Site.

Print out the suggest settings for both on them and them compare them --- because thaere are a few difference.

Set your SERVICES up to their recomendations and you will have a faster and happy computer.

I did this about a year ago and have had ZERO problems since.

    Alicia J,

Unless you are on a network which uses Windows Messenger, I recommend you follow the link previously posted by Daisy (originally PeteC) to uninstall it. It is not otherwise needed. If you are currently using it for instant messaging, suggest using MSN Messenger instead. It is very similar but much easier to control.

I already have windows messenger service disabled using a little utility I found here http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

Now I want to know about the messenger. Is that what Daisy's command line in Run is for? getting rid of messenger?

That utility is for disabling Messenger Service, a good source of popups from spammers, and different from Windows Messenger, which as you noted (msmsgs.exe) is still running on your system. The command line will remove Windows Messenger, which is an integrated instant messaging program that likes to start up by itself, or with the help of Norton Antivirus, and better replaced with MSN Messenger if that type of instant messaging program is desired.
