Somewhat  to say that this has me flummoxed.

Opening IE and by association Windows Update no longer brings up the Dial Up Connection Dialogue box, just the "˜Work Offline - no connection to the Internet is currently available "¦â€¦ "˜ message box. (XP Pro + SP1, IE 6SP1 patched to date)

This occurred the same day I installed Office 2003 Std, FrontPage 2003 and Publisher 2003 plus Links 2003 "“ maybe a coincidence, maybe not.

The Dial Up Manager supplied by my ISP "“ BT Yahoo works perfectly as does opening OE > Send/Receive which brings up Dial Up Connection Dialogue box.

Both IE and Windows Update can be accessed if OE is connected and clicking links in OE opens IE and connects to the page so long as OE is connected.

The same problem occurs if I set another ISP as default which suggests that there is no conflict with the BT Yahoo dial up manager.

Tried so far with no result :

    Sfc /scannow

    Repair IE and reinstall IE.

Repair XP "“ first try hung, reset and repair completed but very definitely not right "“ no USB mouse for e.g. and the problem remained.

Resorted to ASR which restored both the system and the problem almost faultlessly.

Don't think it's a problem with the recent critical patch for IE - installed that today on a friend's m/c with no ill effects.

    Any thoughts out there?

    Pete,

Is "Never Dial" selected under Tools - Internet Options - Connections?

Odd. Think I'd be inclined to try the quick and dirty solution of deleting and then recreating the connection.

I already tried that early on with no result - will give it another go later today.

Incidentally same problem using another ISP.

    Hi Pete

perhaps try setting it to "Dial if not present ", Applying that, then setting it back to "Always dial default" and Applying back again...

along the same lines, if ?you have more than one connection, make the other one your default, convince it a bit... then set your default back to the way you want it, and Apply

thinking about it, these two would maybe best be done the opposite way round - refresh its idea of what the default should be, then convince it to use said default.

good luck & best wishes, HJ.

HJ - thanks for your input ........

Been down that road with no change and also created new connection and deleted old with no change. Did note though that the BT Yahoo dialer manager re-created the dial up I deleted and made it default, so maybe they've changed something, although no trouble connecting through OE.

    Update .......

Uninstalled dialler manager - no change, reinstalled - no change, so that does not appear to be the culprit.

    Basically - nothing.

Ran WinsockFix - also had no effect, but didn't expect it to.

You are an Angel :) Right on the button - deleted ggext1.dll and everything back to normal.

I was very suspicious of the hearts appearing in the Google tool bar, but left it at that.

Next time I'm in the States I may just look you up and give you a big hug :D - there's no way I would have found that little bug...***!

Glad that fixed your problem, but I can't take the credit. MiniB came up with the answer. When I saw MiniB's post, I wondered if that was what had happened to you.

But, by all means, when you come to the US, the door is open for you, and I'm known for being a good cook! Afraid there is not a lot to photograph here in NW Ohio, though, just miles and miles and acres of farms! And more farms. Corn, soybeans, wheat, and cows. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ....... But, it's home, and I wouldn't live anywhere else. I've gypsied around the world, and keep finding myself back here, home sweet home.

Thinking back I remember Ohio - visited there on business in the 70's - Cleveland and Montpellier - some brass plant - Chase Brass?. And I remember the journey down the turnpike - fields, fields and more fields and the odd Ford water tower!

My first visit to the States - the vastness of it all left an indelible mark in my mind. Very crowded over here - relatively speaking.
