I've joined my daughters and my puter together using cross over cat 5.
I've run the networking wizard on both machines and she can now share my internet connection using IE. I vcan also pick up my email from her machine.

I've shared her C drive and can see it from my machine. I've also shared out the My Docs under the account I've created on her machine for me. I can also see this.

They are also part of the same workgroup.

What I can't do is copy anything to this shared folder. I have right clicked, sharing and security, set the folder to be shared and ticked the allow users to make changes to my files. But I still cant copy anything to the share.

I've rebooted both machines and no difference.

What i have noticed is the folder keeps the 'read only' attibute even if I take it off and apply it. As soon as I check its properties again the read only check box is ticked (although greyish)

What I'd like to do is make it so I could either..

    1. Make the folders on pickles puter 'protected' so I have to enter a password to access them from my machine and be able to copy stuff to them or...

    2. Just be able to copy stuff to the folders from my machine.

I've gone through the troubleshooter and it didn't help. I have all the networkin bits installed I need.

I'd rather not use the 'shared documents' folder either (unless thats the only way to do it)

I've had a search through the posts here and couldn't find anything that quite fitted my problem :(

    Thanks

Go into the share and look at the permissions. All my folders are read only but the files in them can be changed. It is all my stuff so I give myself anything I want in my profile. If you are using Pro then you can disable simple filesharing and add profiles to the share and dole out permissions. You won't need the Guest account.

    My $.01 on the subject.

Are you sure that is a good idea ?

It may be handy but I believe can also be dangerous. If any NASTY happens to get in it may well have a bad effect on BOTH machines.

ICS etc. is nice but it is also dangerous. What gets into one can go through all. Especailly sharing the Internet connection.

I have a three machine Network using a Router. But I leave NOTHING permanently shared. Share when I need to then shut it down.

Except what XP sets up by default. One of these days I am going to see about stopping that.

If you have a Dialup-ISP then I do not know what to say.

But if you have DSL or Cable then I would prefer to see you have a Router. The Router not only has an incoming firewall but also keeps the Local Area Newtork and the Internet SEPARATED. One will run without the other.

But better Yet. The way ICS works using your machine for the connection and it goes down NOBODY get to the Internet. With a Router each machine has its own connection.

I know ICS works but I myself do not care for having all machines depending on just one.

YES. YES. The initial costs are a bit higher. But the benifits are worth it I believe. The hardware Firewall alone is a BIG benifit.

That is what disabling simple filesharing and giving only certain premissions to different profiles is for. You can look but not touch. I use NTFS so maybe if you use Fat32 that option isn't in there. I wouldn't know. If you have Home everything is wide open in the share or you can't do anything about the permissions. Anybody else uses my machine they are a User not an Administrator. Users get little on my machines. Here is one link about filesharing

I gather from your intro that both PCs are running XP-pro so this is directed at that situation. If you have something different, it will need to be done a little differently in spots. Also, since you are after security options, NTFS will do you lots better than FAT32 so I've also assumed that.

    - log on to each PC with a username & Non-blank password. For maximum security options, use different username/passwords on each PC.
    - if either/both are using FAT32, do start~run~cmd and then
convert c: /fs:ntfs (and the same for each partition)
    - put your username/password in the local users section of both PCs
    - put your username into the administrator group
    - disable 'simple file sharing'

You can now tweak and fine tune security to suit yourself and all should work fine.

In XP-Pro with sharing properly set up, the root of each drive will already be shared. Hidden administrative share so C$, D$, E$, etc. are the share names. You can still create/share subfolders to suit yourself.

Sorry for the delay in posting back (joys of fatherhood you know ;))

I decided to start again from scrathc after reading your post Newt and its all working fine now. One thing I did notice was that if I renamed the workgroup it seemed to cause the problems. So I left it as workgroup and I can now log onto my daughters computer and see the drives I want and from hers I can log onto mine :)

I realise the sharing the internet connection is a little iffy and the checking of email but once I haev the money I will be buying a adsl modem/router for us both.

Thansk once again for the help.

    I do not understand that.

Does that say you will be buying two units ?

If so why. ? One should do the job nicely. You should be able to plug up to four machines into the Router. And all would use the same account. And all can be online at the same time.

Two Modem/routers would require two accounts. ( I believe )
