I`m running IE5.5 on Win 95B. I lost my Dial up connection to my ISP and had to "make new connection " per their instructions. Since doing that I saved my password OK but can`t keep the check mark in the connect automatically box, I have to click "Connect" each time I go on line. No big deal, but there`s a way to do this and I can`t remember what I did in the dim and distant past to recover it. Any Help?

I think the Call Wave program caused my first problem. They sent down an upgrade for caller ID and that`s when the fun began! More detail if you need it.
    Thanks as usual

Open IE, click on Tools, Internet Options and select the Connections tab and put a check mark in "Always dial my default connection. "

    HTH :)

The always dial was checked, (dot in circle),but the default user, GRM in this case, wasn`t entered below. I entered it and that solved the auto connect problem onIE. If I attempt to read mail, go fromIE to Outlook express, it takes me off line and I have to click connect to use Outlook Express. Also Outlook Express won`t connect automatically if I attempt to open it first!! Once I do connect to OE it will allow me to go to Internet Explorer without going through the reconnect process!
Dam! confusing ain`t it. Maybe much ado about nothing?

While I`m on here, I have an easy one for someone who knows.
A right hand click on my computer/properties shows me
    Win95 4.00 950B

Is this version, 95B or an older- or newer- version?
It`s tough to be inexperienced, and not too bright at the same time!
I appreciate the help and WILL report results.

IE and OE share the same dial-up connection.

When you open Outlook Express and allow it to make the dial-up does it automatically hang-up after checking the mail?

If so, open OE, click on Tools, Options, and remove the checkmark from the option "Hang up after sending and receiving ".

As for your question concerning your version of Win95, I'm not that familiar with Win95, maybe someone else will be able to answer this question for you.

    HTH. :)

    Thanks Rod ,
The hang up option was not checked. Everything seems to be normal once I get OE open on line, it`s just that it doesn`t want to show itself until I pamper it and manually click the connect button.
I`ll take this Win 95 query over to that forum if some one doesn`t come up with an answer.

To make OE connect automatically check in the options on the gereral tab and make sure the line that says send and recieve messages at startup is checked. If OE hangs up your connection when you open it try this. Click on tools\accounts. Click on your email account so that it's highlighted and then click on the properties button. On the connection tab uncheck the line that says always connect to this account using.

The send and receive is checked.
I unchecked always connect in always connect e mail properties, no change except I sent myself a test e mail and it failed to deliver it until I rechecked it.
To review, The OE will act normal, with the exception of not being able to connect automatically, I click the IE Icon on the desk top, then the connect button, it connects to theISP and every thing is normal.
If I`m in IE and click on the Mail Icon-then, read mail, it disconnects the connection to the line and I have to reconnect manually again.
I can go from OE to IE OK but not from IE to OE.
Fat lot I know about it, but it seems to me, if the OE would connect automatically the problem might be solved.
    All assistance is greatly appreciated.

    1. IE-tools, options, connection, check "dial whenever not present ".
    2. OE-tools, options, connections, "ask before switching ", IE/OE share, make sure your dial up is "set as default" and "default is the same and "dial whenever not present "
    3. Control panel, add/remove programs, highlight IE5.5, click add/remove, select repair. When done, reboot.
    4. Control panel, Internet options, connections, uncheck "dial whenever not present ", then recheck.(IE seems to forget this when you do a repair).

    Post back good or bad.

    Here I am,good or bad!
I did all the above, opened Internet Explorer, checked the auto connect box on the way. It opens auto now OK.
Opened OE, went through the same procedure, checked the auto connect box on the way, It still doesn`t open automatically.

Here`s the change. When I open IE, and click on the Mail- read mail, I get the following box.
A dial up connection has already been established for grm.

    two choices

try to locate the server on the current connection
hang up and dial grm net. ( this one is checked)
at the bottom of the box
Don`t warn me about this ( unchecked)
Not knowing for sure what to do, I did nothing, clicked cancel, got the error message
An Error has occurred while establishing the dial up connection grm.net
    And here I am!

When you lost your original dial up and made a new one, did you delete the old one? You could have just click on "find server on current connection ". It sounds like OE and IE dont realize they have the same default dial up.
When you open IE, tools, options, connections, how many "dial up settings" are listed in the box?..

Yes I deleted the old connection.
There is only the one connection in the location you sent me to.
    Thanks

When you get the message asking you if you want to try to locate the server on the current connection, choose yes. It should then find the server and work for you. You are getting that message because you checked the line "ask before switching ". If you check the line that says don't warn me about this, it won't give you this prompt anymore and you'll be right back to where you started (it will hang up on you like it's been doing). It does sound as if it wants to use a different connection. Not sure what to tell you about how to go about fixing it. Usually unchecking the "line always connect using" takes care of this. This line I'm speaking of is in tools\accounts in OE, not tools\properties. Just thought I would mention this because there are similar lines in tools\properties and I thought maybe you did it in the wrong place.

I went through the E mail settings and found nothing typed in the "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP server) I typed in mail.grm.net. Also nothing in "Outgoing mail (SMPT) server. I typed in the same thing there.) OE now dials auto but I have to click on "Try to locate the server on current connection" and it goes ahead and checks for mail. Also, now on OE-tools-accounts, there`s two listings, one is mail grm.net mail (default) Dial up (connection.)
The other is mail grm.net (1) mail any available (connection)

Am I correct in assuming that if I remove the mail grm net mail (1)I`ll rid myself of my problem? Will that get rid of the box that has the "try to locate the server on current connection? "
    Whaddya think?

It sounds as if the account isn't set up correctly or isn't being recognized correctly. In either case lets take a look at the mail account again.

Open OE, click on Tools, Accounts, click on the Mail Tab. There should be only one account listed here. But if I read your last post correctly you have two, mail grm.net and mail grm.net (1).

Before we delete either of these lets try to see if we can correct the default account first. Click once on the mail grm.net account, then click on the Properties button.

On the General tab make sure your Name and Email Address are correct, and that there is a checkmark in "Include this account when receiving mail or snychronizing ".

Then click on the Servers tab.
In "My incoming mail server is a _____ Server" type POP3
In "Incoming Mail POP3:" type pop3.grm.net
In "Outgoing Mail (SMTP):" type mail.grm.net
In "Account name" type in your user name
In "Password" type in your dialup connection password and make sure there is a checkmark in "Remember Password ".

Then click on the Connection Tab. Make sure there is a checkmark in "Always connect to this account using ", and in the dropdown menu select your the dialup connection you use to connect to the internet. Then click on Apply and then OK.

Now click on Tools, Options and select the Connections tab. Make sure that there is a checkmark in "Ask before switching dialup connections ", and that there is not a checkmark in "Hang up after sending and receiving ".

Now click on the "Change" button under the Internet Connection Settings. On the Connections tab make sure that "Always dial my default connection" is selected. Then click on Apply and OK to close the Internet Connections Settings box, then click on Apply and Ok to close the OE Options settings box.

Close OE, disconnect from the internet, start OE again and see if it can make a connection on its own. Then click on Tools, Accounts, Mail, and click once on the "mail grm.net (1)" account to select it and then click on the Remove button. A window will open confirming if you really want to delete this account, click on Yes.

Hope this helps. Let us know. :)

    Thanks to all hands!
    It works it works!
Lest I wear out my welcome I`ll make this short, but to ROD here`s what I found.
    You wrote,
Then click on the Connection Tab. Make sure there is a check mark in "Always connect to this account using" Nothing there, I selected GRM.

    You wrote,
Now click on the "Change" button under the Internet Connection Settings. On the Connections tab make sure that "Always dial my default connection" is selected. Then click on Apply and OK to close the Internet Connections Settings box, then click on Apply and Ok to close the OE Options settings box.
    I found,
Always dial my default connection was not selected , changed it.

    You wrote
Then click on the Servers tab.
In "My incoming mail server is a _____ Server" type POP3
In "Incoming Mail POP3:" type pop3.grm.net
In "Outgoing Mail (SMTP):" type mail.grm.net

    I typed pop3.grm.net in place of mail.grm.net.
When I attempted to open OE I got the error message pop3 could not be found, I went back and changed it back to mail.grm.net and every thing works fine.
I`m certainly not being critical here,( I`m nothing but grateful for the help), but thought you`d like to know.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. As for the incorrect advise, My Bad! While typing my response to you I was checking my settings and inadvertently typed in the settings from my system instead of giving you the proper setting for yours. That'll teach me to proof read before clicking on Submit Reply. :D
