    OS: Win98Se
    MB: GA-6VXE7+ Rev 3.0
    Memory: 512
    VIA chipset BM drivers: 4.37a
    Video: GeForce2
Primary IDE device- Maxtor 18GB Hard Drive
Secondary IDE Devices- Master DVD LiteOn LTD-163 -Slave Hitachi CDRom 4X

Every time we select DMA for the DVD player the computer locks up as Windows is loading. The DMA on channel one seems to work fine for the hard Drive.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thank you very very much.

I am not sure but did not know that. This could well be the problem. I will have to take the CD rom out and see if I still have a problem.

    Thank you very much
I hope you have hit the nail on the head.

Problem solved I removed the CDRom that was 4x and sellected DMA for the DVD player. Reboot and windows reloaded with out any problems. Clearly the CD rom did not support DMA.

You solved for me a problem of several weeks which was getting me most angry. First I had thought it was the VIA chip set then I thought it was some errant registry entry. It was for my Grandson's computer and I would not have been happy with out finding the answer to this one. I spent a full week with "Google" and their "Groups" with no help.

    Thank you again
