    Help,
I started a disc defrag on my computer. All it did was loop at 1% forever.
Then I went to safe mode, tried to disc defrag ...at 94% it froze with this error:

What caused this problem and how do I fix it?

KRNL386.EXE is an oldie from Windows 3.x days. It performs a similar function to the newer Kernel32 but for older apps (DOS stuff mainly) that need it.

My best guess unless you have done some hardware changes in the recent past is an issue with your video drivers. Download the newest ones available for 98 and your video card and update. Even if you have the same version there may be a problems with one of your existing vid drivers.

I would vote here for some system file corruptions.
In safe mode (a screensaver off, a broadband modem, if any, off) run scandisk first. If no go, run a scandisk from DOS.

    Hi.

Found this one on the web.

    -------------------
    General Protection Fault

Complete error messages reads "[program name] caused a general protection fault in module krnl386.exe at 0001:000049 "

A Windows error message meaning there is a large problem with your systems files. This problem will not go away, but cascade, causing your system to deteriorate over time.

You can try running Scan Disk:

    Click the Start button
    Select Programs, Accessories, Scan Disk

    And try Defrag:

    Click the Start button
    Select Programs, Accessories, Defrag

The best option is to reinstall or even upgrade your operating system.
    --------------

Since you were running defrag when it happened I would go with Newt and broni's suggestion first and if not successful reinstall the OS.
