Depends which OS you are running .....

In XP Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems > Properties > Modem > Speaker Volume. Depending on your modem this may/may not turn off the dial noise - if a voice modem this controls the voice volume.

    In 98 Control Panel > Modems > Properties? ........

Guess there is an AT command to do this, but no idea what it is.

Thanks for the advice, I tried what you said but no luck. I've had this happen before with the same results.

Some modems are funny trying to kill the sound. If going through the control panel, modems, doesn't work. Open your dialup folder, right click on your dialup, properties, then the configure button and mute it there. I know it seems like doing the same thing, but I have seen modems you have to go this route.

    Try this:

Find the Extra Settings box, in advanced modem properties of device mangler.
Put in M0L0 (that's M zero L zero). Save and restart.

(Foregoing blatently plagerized from a old post by "Reboot ").

John B, I'm not finding the advanced settings, can you be more precise in your instructions?

Hi Bubba, I have Win98SE so if your OS is different these directions may be slightly different:

    Right click My Compter
    Click on Properties
    Click on Device Manager tab
Click on + sign next to the modem line, then click on the line that shows your modem to highlight it
Click on Properties at the bottom
    Click on Connection tab
    Click on Advanced

This should bring up the Advanced Setting box where you can enter the M0L0 string in the "Extra settings" line.

OK your way out and restart your computer.

Hope this clears it up for you.:)

Hi Mark, thanks for posting and glad it worked. Myself I prefer to hear the squeeks and squawks just to make sure the dialup is working OK. (Not that I would really know if it wasn't!!):D
