Yesterday, I was able to disable to hide all items on the desktop via gpedit. Today, it has come back as enabled somehow. How do I go about it? I am trying to change the wallpaper on the desktop and do activities on the desktop. Please help me.

Did you configure, "Hide and Disable All Items on the Desktop "?

If so, run gpedit.msc and change the setting to unconfigured.

If it doesn't stay that way, go to Start > Run and type:

    gpupdate /force /boot
    <Enter>

    Reboot.

Change the setting again, if necessary.

    Gpudate

    Hi Abraxas,

I have gone to start > run and typed in gpupdate /force/boot and gpupdate doesn't work. I went to the command prompt and it returns as an invalid command :(

What else do i have to do?

Do a search for it. It should be in System32.

There is a space before /boot in case that wasn't just a typo.

    W2k Pro And Netware 6.0

    Hi again,

I have forgotten to mention that it's in a network a combination of Netware 6.0 and W2k Server and the client is an XP. I have found gpupdate and it seemed to have to worked but it still didn't have effect for the disabling of the items on the desktop. I hope that helped ..

Did you go back to gpedit and put any changed settings back to unconfigured?

Also, are you possibly using any tweaking programs that control user access to things?

Disabling the hide items on the desktop

I'm not too sure if there is any third party tweakie involved. Is there a way to check it out? I would like to turn it off for good.

    Hi again

I have set it back to unconfigured and restarted / logged off again. I even set the gpupdate /force /boot and restarted / logged off. I did all the possibilities.

Don't know what to tell you at this point. That policy is located under HKEY_USERS.

You will need to have Administrative privileges, of course, and check each entry under HKEY_USERS for an entry in the right pane:

"NoDesktop" with a value of 0x00000001

    under

    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You can delete any of these found or change their value to 0.

The change won't take effect until you log off or restart. And it must be a true logoff---not a Fast User Switching.

Is it possible that you changed more than one setting in that policies section? All of them are unconfigured by default.

You might also check the Resultant Set of Policy.

    Run: rsop.msc

If you are not a member of a domain, you will probably get a message that local copies of the adm files are being used. That's fine.

Look in the same place as you did under gpedit to see if the hide desktop policy is there. If it is, it still has not been disabled.

Also, try running chkdsk /f to be sure there are no damaged security descriptors.

If you are a member of a domain, and rsop still shows the desktop disabled after you enable it in your gpedit, then you will need to have the domain administrator re-enable it for you.
