Hi again: I'm getting an error message on shutdown, "DWWIN.exe failed to initialize as this station is shutting down "

File search reveals this .exe program is the Windows Error Reporting, installed with Service Pack 1 or 1a. There is a DLL file named dwwin.dll in my system32 folder.

Where, if anywhere should I look to see what error on shutdown that this app wants to report on, if any. Or any other ideas.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Here is a good (long but good) explanation of what it is and what it does.

Since the exe is only called/run when needed, it surely sounds like some item on your PC (hardware/driver probably) is having problems at shutdown but late enough into the process that even a high priority app like this can't start.

Your event log may have more information. If not, read thru This thread on another forum where the same problem was posted and quite a few ideas were tossed out.

    Hi Newt, Hi Ann:

Jeez, application, event manager has so many errors (red) and warings (yellow) it is going to take some time to get them into this post. I can't cut and paste them, but using a screen print app, I can print them out and then hand copy them into the post.

Yesterday there was only one, that darn user thing, and it is back again.

Is there another way to post these messages??

    Thanks for your kindness.

Martin - no need for that. Easier way.

First, empty your event logs to clear away the clutter.

Next, do whatever it is that triggers the error.

Then back to the event logs and locate a likely suspect. Open it and click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to your clipboard.

Paste clipboard contents in a reply here.

Newt, this all from system. There are others pertaining to not finding printer applications.

This Application popup entry appears 8 times last reboot. All prior entries were cleared.

Nothing in either Application or System which appears to have originated at shutdown.

Hope you can make some sense out of this.

    Thanks, Martin

Edit: Here is another one, you said it may be driver related. This particular problem is off and on, sometimes the firewire or OHCI host controller for IEE1394 appears in network connections and works with my Video camera, and sometimes it does not. I have not seen any apparent cause or relationship with any other component or program, the behavior is random

The help center says I don't need any help, just plug in the card. There are no other drivers avialable than the ones in system32. When not working, has yellow caution in device manager, uninstalling and reinstalling does nothing. No updated drivers available, no roll back drivers availabe.

Newt, Ann, All: I thought I'd start as a new post, might save some reading and confusion.

    1. Cured the shutdown error dwwin by uninstalling Zone Alarm again. Free version. Have paid version 4, but can't get configured to work with my network.

    2. Cured the printer services error by disabling Epson entries, a printer I uninstalled last week. How do you get the entries out of services?

    3. Cured the user errors by setting up 2nd account, using it, then deleting it, per Newt's usual good advice.

    4. After these, Application Popups re: Reg check no longer in System event viewer.

I would first try using a reg cleaner to find all entries for Epson and delete that way.

Martin - re your ZA issues, the best advice these days is to get rid of ZA and go with another product. For some reason ZA just isn't playing nice with XP systems in some cases and I haven't read about a good fix.

Hi Dave: Thanks for the help.

I ran Norton Win Doctor, EasyCleaner2 and RegSeeker.

Only RegSeeker found any references to Epson printer, about 30 of them. Deleted All.

Epson entries still in Services. I diabled them in Hardware Profile 1, Only profile in this machine as I don't know how to use it or what it does. They still show up in services on boot.

    Other errors still uncleard:

Newt said this was probably a UMAX scanner trying to load. I deleted all registry references to UMAX, Still getting error.

I did the ASPI_YOU fix per Newt, no joy.

And, while doing all this, get error in system events, "drive failure attempting to write to page file" get error multiple times, system crashed, would not reboot, get NTLD failure. Panic, Panic!!

System would not recognize drive 0 ( C & D ) on boot. I figure, another IBM fiasco, 80gig drive, maybe 6 months old.

Shut down machine, stop, think. Hmm, had problem with system not recognizing slave drive a couple of days ago, turned out power connector bad. Maybe??

Unplug power connector and IDE cable from drive, start machine, of course no boot, trying to reset MOBO. Shut down, replug drive, boot with no problem. Bad contact of power or IDE cable . Fixed.:D

That's where the matter stands as of this moment, tune in later for latest developments.:) Or, tell me how to fix this #%$@&^ Stuff.

    Martin
