When I tried to bootup this AM I was presented with a BSOD with the following message.

    While initializing device VSDATA95...
Invalid VXD dynamic link call to device number 28 service 24.
    Your Windows configuration is invalid.

Run the windows Setup program again.
    SYSTEM HALTED

I don't know what it means when they say run the Windows setup program again...I never ran it to begin with so I don't know what they mean by run it again.
And how can I run anything at all when all I have is a big blue screen.

Is the computer just no good any more...I hope somebody knows what to do, because I sure don't...

    TIA

I don't know what this means about zonealarm.

...I cannot run anythoing anyway as all I get is the big blue screen that has the message on it that I posted before.
What is...Run windows setup again?? I can't run anything at all and I don't know what the Windows setup is...

Brett...the link you gave has nothing to do with the problem, as the problem has nothing to do with browsing the internet...but thanks anyway...

VSDATA95.Vxd is a Zone Alarm file, and it is corrupt. You need to uninstall Zone Alarm, Brett's link has this link on how to completely remove it.
It can be done in Safe Mode.

I had to do a system recovery...all third party software has to be reinstalled. Once I delete all files related to ZoneAlarm, is it safe to reinstall it?
Someone told me that I did not need a firewall if I was not running a server, but I feel safer with a firewall.

Could someone tell me what it meant when it said to run Windows Setup and if it can be done from safemode? I didn't know what it meant so had to do a complete system recovery which is very time conuming and reinstalling all the software will take days...if the situationarises again, I would like to know what to do beforehand.

    Thanks for the responses...much appreciated!!

Thanks, Brett. I had gone to your original link and had found this one there. Tried to print it but now, after reinstalling the printer it won't print. Everything causes an error in COMDLG.DLL! I have posted it in hardware forum and I hope someone there knows what to do.

Do you know anything about the question I asked about Windows Setup? And if it would be safe to reinstall Zonealarm?

    Thanks

Ya can try, but there's a chance that that error message might return. If that happens, following the uninstall procedure again should help.

But if that error returns, and I am faced with the BSOD again, and cannot boot HOW do I run Windows Setup? And how do I run it if I cannot boot? I really do not want to a System Recovery again!

See previous question re: Windows Setup...

What do people do who cannot use ZoneAlarm because of this error...do you just go without a firewall?
Is that ZoneAlarm file always corrupted, and if it is, why doesn't ZA fix it? They must know about the problem...

You'd boot into Safe Mode and uninstall from there.

I use Kerio - not because I cannot use ZA, but because, IMO, Kerio is a better product.

AFAIK, this is not a known issue with ZA and so it *shouldn't* happen again. But never say never ... :)

Thanks...but nobody seems to know what this Windows Setup is. I can't run it if I don't know what it is and I can't seem to find out.
Is it in safe mode somewhere??

I'm sorry, but I just don't know what Windows Setup is. Is it the same as System Recovery? I have already done that and really don't want to have to do it again as it will take days to get evrything installed and working again,, I keep askng about it but nobody seems to know, or else they assume I know when I don't.

What is Windows Setup and how do you run it?

    Thanks

That link must have died, as it was working when I posted it.
That is called installing Windows, and no, there is not a shortcut to it.
    Boot the computer with a bootup floppy, choose CD support, watch the screen for the drive letter for the CD, will not be the normal letter, may be E:, use it for X below, enter in this command at the prompt after inserting the Win CD;
    X:\setup
Have the product number handy, as you will be asked for it.
Alternately, setup can be run from C:\Windows\Options\Cabs, if the files exist there.
    c:\windows\options\cabs\setup

By the way, installing windows will not cure ZA problem, as long as it's files are present along with the registry entries.

It would have to be run from options/cabs because this is an OEM and only has a recovery disk.

Thanks...I needed to know because the BSOD said to run Windows Setup and nothing could be run with the computer not booting

I think I have deleted all the ZA files and registry entries...I probably will install ZA again as I don't like to be without a firewall, but maybe I should download it again rather than install it from the setup I have already downloaded and used to install it the first time?

    Thanks very much to everyone....
