Help!!! !!! Help!!! How do I turn off the 'synchronize' feature of Windows XP. About half of my time online, the computer will begin synchronizing. This slows everything down, or worse freezes the computer up. At times it will synchronize 3 or more times a session. I've tried the instructions on configuring it but it has had no effect. I have never been asked if I wanted to synchronize and I have no need to synchronize.
    thanx

Working from memory here so I hope I got it right:

    1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the Offline Files tab.
    4. Disable there, and then click OK.

Been there, done that. There is also another box I unchecked on the time/date function in the control panel. I have even set up a schedule of synchronizing that would allow it happen once a year. These all have had no effect on the synchronization that the computer goes into. If things slow way down while online, I can log off and there pops up the 'synchronizing message' telling me to wait until it finishes to log off. I still must be doing something wrong still because I've had XP for over a year without this problem. My computer is several months old and came with a newer version of Windows XP and I was wondering if the newer version of XP had changed the synchronization.

The location noahdfear pointed you to should have done the trick. If not, something is busted.

My first thought is a trojan or piece of malware calling home that triggers the synch messages. I suggest a virus scan using RAV's online one, then download, update, run first Ad-aware then Spybot. Links in my signature.

    If the behavior persists, then
start~run~cmd followed by chkdsk x: /f (where "x" means all your drives) and when that finishes (reboot required to chkdsk your system drive)
    start~run~sfc /scannow
