I was given a MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer as a gift. The Intellipoint version 5 software that came with it will not install on my Win98 pc, so I downloaded the next latest compatable version 4.1. Although it doesn't contain all the features that version 5 does, it has most and works well with this mouse except for the pointer speed. It is set at a fairly fast pace which I can handle, but when I set it lower the mouse pointer moves erratically. I tried both the USB and PS/2 connection options, and the PS/2 works best.

Win 98 predates wireless devices by some years - my guess is that although 4.1 works it is not 100% compatible with a wireless mouse. I haven't looked on the MS site - was there any indication there that 4.1 was OK for that mouse under Win 98 or that the mouse is compatible with Win 98?

Thanks for your reply. Intellipoint 4.1 has a drop down list of supported mice, including the wireless Intellimouse Explorer. It doesn't include the newest model that I have, but the only difference is the horizontal scroll wheel feature, which isn't supported by the 4.1 software. The site that I downloaded from did show that 4.1 is compatible with Win98. I believe the mouse is recognized like any other PS/2 mouse, and does function even before the Intellipoint software is installed.

May help (thought I would throw it in).

Drivers maybe? (Intellimouse drivers seem to be a bit strange/different).

If you have any files for the newer (5) version on your system, they may be conflicting with the older (4) version you are trying to run. Try doing a full removal of the drivers...go to Add/Remove programs and remove the intellimouse software...then go to device manager and remove the mouse. Shutdown, disconnect the new mouse and reconnect the old one. When you boot again run the installer program and as long as it runs OK, reconnect the new mouse for the next startup. If you have trouble with PnP recognition and installation, try installing the drivers from the "list" or using "have disk ".

mattman, I tried your suggestion and unfortunately things didn't change. Whenever I change the pointer speed the cursor moves erratically...it only works smoothly at one setting. I've been noticing other problems, like things happening onscreen as though I used a mouse button, but I didn't. The driver conflict is a good suggestion if I can only figure it out.

    MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer

It could be just plain INTERFERENCE from something else.

I tried a wireless FOR ONE DAY ONLY. Went back to a good old very solid and very reliable PS2 Wired. And a Wired USB for the second mouse.

I use the PS2 as the MAIN device as I have it in DOS and the SAFE Mode.

BillyBob, that's a good suggestion too. I had the receiver next to my monitor, so I moved it as far as possible from any electrical components, and I changed the frequency numerous times, but no luck. It still may be interference, but I'll continue to try the software route. I like the mouse and it's features although I wouldn't have bought it for myself...I agree the wire is no big deal and always reliable.

If this is the IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0, MS says it's only compatiable with XP. It looks like the software you downloaded was for "Intellimouse explorer" (4.12) not "wireless Intellimouse explorer ".

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317910#appliesto

Here's the download page. When you scroll down to "wireless Intellimouse explorer ", then to operating system, it only gives the choices of XP and 2000.

aleekat, this mouse IS the 2.0 version. You're most likely right, it's just not compatible with Win98. At least I have a gift receipt and can hopefully return it to Best Buy. Maybe I'll try the corded Intellimouse Explorer...I sure like the forward/back side buttons for browsing. Thanks.

Just a follow up...I returned the MS mouse and decided on the Logitech Cordless Click Plus, which happened to be the same price at $49.99, an even trade with my gift receipt. The Logitech is very similar to MS's in form and function, except it's compatible with Win 95 & up. The installation was quick and problem free, the software allows allot of customizing and includes battery level status, and the mouse tracks as smoothly and quickly as my corded mouse. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Thank you for the reply containing good news.

I have always had better luck with Logitech anyway.
