Help, I am running windows 98 on a Compaq desktop. I just installed Verizon DSL (About a Week ago). Now my computer keeps shutting its self down. I have tried keeping track of different program I was running at the time but there seems to be no rhythm, reason, or correlation to any one program. I also had to install an Ethernet card (I think its call netgear) along with installing the DSL modem. What can I look at help isolate this shut down problem? I do have a Dialup Modem I us for sending/receiving faxes, it was used for connecting to the Internet.

I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem. I loaded Verizon's DSL package and have been getting "cpu brain-farts" and random BSOD's. Usually a thorough registry cleaning will smooth things out but only for a couple days at most. I have to use the USB hookup as the verizon software can't communicate with my ethernet port.

Is it doing an actual Shutdown, or is it popping off and rebooting?

In my case it jumps to a black screen with a blinking curser (or the BSOD) I'll have to reset and wait for the scandisk before things are normal again.

I guess staying it shuts down is a poor use of words. The windows goes to a blank screen and starts to reboot. It goes through the normal you have shut your computer down wrong routine (Disk Scan), then is up and running for a short period. I have run Ad-aware 6.0 and also upgraded the system with 98SE and it still happens. However, after upgrading to 98SE it doesnto happen as offend.

LMCO, it sounds like you have an overheating problem. I suggest cleaning out the fans, heat sinks, and air vents. When a processor and/or video card overheats, the computer pops off and reboots.

jeffreyclay, would you start a thread of your own? Yours is a different problem, maybe. Those BSOD screens usually gives an error message, as to which file is affected by another file. However, if the messages are not the same, but instead random or different messages each time, you could have a pending hardware failure.

    VIDEO causing the problem

Markp62 "“ Thanks for the help, it only took me 3 or 4 weeks to isolate the problem to the Video. The Video unfortunately is part of the motherboard and they want an outlandish price for a replacement. I am good to try a VIDEO card to resolve this problem. A friend has a card I can try. Thanks again. :)

You're welcome. Be sure to disable the onboard video in the BIOS.
