I hope someone can help me. I keep geting files named "~DFxxxx.tmp ", where "x" is an increasing sequential 4 digit number.I've gone through msconfig, and can't figure out what's making them. I can't delete the latest one because it's in use by another program. Any deas where they're coming from? Thanks, Neil

If they're from EXCEL, then there's a real problem as I don't have it installed. I have Microsoft Works 2000, and Powerpoint viewer. Any other ideas? Thanks for your time, Neil

Did you close down all running programs before trying to delete the file? If you cannot delete it while booted normally, boot into safe mode and delete it. Or create a folder on your desktop and move it to that folder and delete the folder.

    Hi NeilD

If all other approches fail, you can try GiPo@MoveOnBoot ... Quoting.... "Copies, moves or deletes files and folders on the next system boot. The utility is very useful when the user needs to replace or delete files which are locked by other applications, loaded into the memory or just cannot be changed until next system boot ".
Above link is for home page and newer shareware version. This link is for the older Free version 1.9.5 .exe. I have it on my system, never had the need to use it... yet. One understanding, I would NOT choose this type of approach on installed program files.

    Hi NeilD

If you want to know/understand/why this Excel file is there, you could try your luck at Free Microsoft Excel support. Must register to post.

Investigated further on my m/c with both Office 2000 and Works 2000 -

Probably a Works tmp file - naming format for both Works and Office (Excel) seems to be the same or very similar.

My guess is that it is generated by one of the Works applets that starts on boot and runs in the background - that is why you can't delete it - it is in use until you shut down - and Windows is notoriously bad for hanging onto temp files and not discarding them at shut down.

    1. it is an Excel temp file. See http://www.amset.info/tips/office-recovery.asp

    2. you likely do have Excel since it comes with both Works and Office unless you specificly did not install it (it is a default install item). Search for Excel*.*

    3. these will clean as any other temps.

I just built a machine for a friend. All I have on it is Win XP. I installed a bunch of Windows updates and I'm getting these files again. I'm building my new machine this week and I'll install them individually and track this sucker down. I'll post again.

Just in case anyone still checks this. These DBxxxx files are from Pinnacle Hollywood FX pro. After reformatting my machine, I didn't have them until I installed this. They don't bother me anymore. thanks for all your help.
