    More of the same AAARRRRRRRRGH!

My good old faithful HP952C parallel port printer finally bit the dust after 5 years of faithful service. (gears knashed and grind and then locked up for good)

So, as all good HP customers do, I ran down to Office Depot (140 miles round trip) and purchased an HP 7660 USB Photo Printer along with their promise of ease of installation. All went well with the software installation until it prompted me to plug in the printer.

That's when the **** hit the fan. BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH Or BSD as it is known. It says something like: No more IP/TP stacks,
disconnect any new hardware and reboot.

So, I did. Machine would not process through BIOS. Stopped at first screen just before memory check. Reminiscent of problem with HP USB scanner that when plugged in, machine would not boot. Unplugged scanner. Boot stops at same screen.

Clear CMOS. Machine runs through BIOS completely but now Windows won't boot: Get it up in safe mode, use system restore, Windows boots. IEE1394 connection gone, replug scanner, won't function, get warning message on USB webcam.

3 hours later, system back to normal.

Call HP support. Advice: He says I have conflict with network, modem, etc. Tells me to disconnect all network connections, modem, access point etc. I say nuts to that, it is obvious that he has no idea what I went through just to get that network to work in the first place! He says unless I do that they can't help, he had no other suggestions.

So, here I am dear board. Before I put the printer back in the box and drive 70 miles (one way) back to Office Depot, anybody got a fix???

Stupid question, I know, but did you follow the install instructions exactly? USB connections do goofy things! When I installed my HP printer, I had to plug in power and USB at the exact prompts. Only advice I have is to uninstall old printer completely, reboot. Uninstall new printer, reboot. Reinstall printer while RTFM. Might want to post this on the hardware forum so it catches the attention of the techs. Might want to check your event log and post the errors you received.

Guess I've been lucky- never got a BSOD from an HP install- in fact, most will run w/o the bloated HP software they come with, using the on board XP drivers. My cheapie HP 3-in-1 printer has 170Mgs of software, and 5 start up services in msconfig, but it installed flawlessly on the first try.

Sorry I can't be of more help- Good luck!

Hi Johanna: Glad you answered this post, I was beginning to think nobody loved me anymore.:D

Anyhow, I have just completed the install of the HP 7760 Photoprinter and wish I had my old HP 952C back. Anybody who thinks they will be upgrading by buying one of these new fangled fancy software loaded printers better think again.

    But I digress.

I have been working on this since 9:00 this morning and just as about exhausted as I can be. What a brain boggler. I took the 7700 printer back to Office Depot yesterday, which, since they are 70 miles south of here blew that whole day.

Got home in time to take son to baseball practice and daughter to basketball and soccer. Her basketball is overlapping soccer as she was chosen to play in the All-Star tournement. She goes to Soccer practice after school at 4:00 and Basketball at 5:30. It is a pretty tough schedule for a 10 year old.

Good grief, I'm digressing again, back to business:

The 7760 printer has one additional instruction that either I did not see or was not there with the 7700 printer. That was do not use a hub. So, after rearranging all my USB devices, which required the purchase of a new additional hub, I was able to plug direct to the MOBO. I had a similar problem with their 2200C scanner.

After that the install went smoothly and all seemed ok until I went to their update site which told me to uninstall everything I had just installed, download a 47MB file and reinstall. Their download was incredibly slow, less than half of my rated DSL speed.

Their software and registry entries lead me to believe they are taking lessons from Symantic. It took me an hour to get the old stuff off of there. The reinstall went smoothly except I no longer have their program Icons. They dissappeard with the uninstall and never reappeard. Also, the printer software is not in the Add/Remove programs dialog box.

So, at this point I'm pretty much disgusted with the whole thing.
Oh, one other thing. Their uninstall program also uninstalled Norton's System Doctor. I also had to reinstall that.

So, here is to "Smarter" computing.:D

Again thanks for the help, basicly I ended up doing as you suggested

    Martin

P.S. I did not have to uninstall my network as the HP tech told me day before yesterday. I'm glad I told him to forget that. PPS: He did not say anything about a hub either!

Edit: I'm surely not going to do battle with symantic today, it will have to keep 'till tomorrow. It is definately time for my nap.

How in the world did HP uninstall part of Norton Utilities? Norton products must be extracted from the system with tweezers, a fine tooth comb and some dumb luck! Glad you got it working, though.

How HP managed to uninstall a Norton Program is a mystery to me. Maybe, next time I uninstall Norton, I'll use the HP program, since Symantic's uninstall is pathetic. You got to dynamite.

On of the contributors on this board has a signature that says something like this:

    Error: Computer Possesed, Exorcise? Y_N_

I think he must know this machine!
