Arie Slob has a good article about protecting your Internet Explorer browser against "spoof" websites. It is here, http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/surf-safe.html
Sites that use ActiveX or Scripting have to be added to your Trusted Sites list. One of those sites is Windows Update. What about those of us who use the automatic updates feature with Windows XP? Also Norton Internet Security, and any other applications that download their updates without taking you to their website?

They usually access the internet directly, bypassing IE.

Thanks for the reply, Mark. I sort of figured something like that was the case. Is it the same with automatic Windows Update? And are you sure about this? The thing that worries me is if an automatic update feature were getting blocked, there would be no way of knowing it. And with my limited skills, I cannot think of any way of testing it.

In XP Windows Update is a service which starts with Windows, but utilises IE.

The following sites should be added to your Trusted sites

    http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    http://*.windowsupdate.com

With these sites added Auto notification works fine - the last critical update notified to my m/c just fine.

To check your settings go Start > Windows Update - if your security settings do not permit updating you will be notified and instructions given as to what settings to apply.
