I'm using Nestscape 7.1. Certain sites, espec (but not only) sites that require a password, do not allow access, with the message that my cookies are disabled. No matter what I do in preferences, I cannot fix the problem. I have multiple user accounts, but only this one (the primary one) has this problem.

Can I just delete the prefs.js file (and its backup), allow Netscape to reconstitute it (assuming it will do that), and then reestablish my preferences? This would seem to be the easy solution, if it would work. I'm reluctant to experiment, however, without some expert advice. If this won't work, can you offer any other ideas?

    Thanks, Bill

    Welcome to the Forum, William6995!

    Hi Bill,

Maybe you won't have to delete your prefs.js/bak files.

Click on: Tools | Cookie Manager | Manage Stored Cookies
Next, click on the Cookies Sites Tab
Do you see any of the sites you are unable to access, listed? If so highlight, then remove the site.

If no joy, temporarily disable your Popup Blocker and see if this will enable you to access the unavailable sites.

Have you tried pressing the "Esc" key, and seeing if this will allow you access the sites?

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

P.S. Almost forgot! Delete your Netscape Cache, and your C:\WINDOWS\temp files.

Thanks for the quick reply, Ramona.

I tried all of your suggestions, but to no avail. Same problem still persists. Any more ideas? Thanks, Bill

    Hi Bill,

I do know that eBay, and I believe Yahoo, had a problem with Netscape cookies for a time, and Netscape users received the "Cookies not enabled" error.

Have you tried adding the sites to your Cookies list? Tools | Cookie Manager | Allow Cookies from this site

    Hi Ramona,

Still no luck with the cookie problem, so I bit the bullet, and deleted the prefs.js and .bak files. So then I had to start over entirely, reestablish my email acct again. No more cookie problems.

I had backed up my mail, address book, and bookmark files, so I could restore them. But I lost my password and form fill-in files.

Speaking of the password manager and form fill-in files, where are they located, and what are they called? I'd like to back them up occasionally. Thanks, Bill

PS: this is a great forum, and I really appreciate your assistance, and the suggestions from other members, as I read about Netscape problems.

    Hi Bill,

You might have been able to delete the cookies.txt file, rather than lose your entire preferences, but that's water under the bridge. At least you have eliminated the problem, and that's good news!

When backing up your Netscape files, I would suggest backing up the entire Profiles folder which contains your *.slt folder. This will allow you to save all your important data, including the password and form fill files.

    The password file is: randomnumbers.s
The form fill file is: randomnumbers.w

    Glad to have you aboard!

    Ramona,

Hate to bother you again, but I was unable to locate these two files (randomnumbers.s and .w). I did a full search, including hidden files, with no luck. Also, those file extensions are not familiar to me, so I suspect they are special. I know the files must exist, since I've used both features in Netscape. Could you pls provide the location? Thanks, Bill

    Hi Bill,

I may have confused you with my file names. "randomnumber.s" meaning that the file is made up of random numbers. E.G., your file may be named: 62380148.s. Netscape uses the random numbered files for security purposes, making it difficult for anyone to hack into your personal data.

These files are located in your *.slt folder. See: Profiles Folder Location

An easy way to find the two files is to do a Windows Find:
Start | Find | Files or Folders
    Enter: *.s or *.w

I'm sure you will find the files, and the location of your salted (*.slt) folder.

    BTW, it's never a bother...
