I've read past posts about people who have had a similar problem, but I don't want to remove my internet explorer because I won't know how to get it back...

Anyway, I spoke to some tech guy at sympatico today (which might have somewhat solved my problem, but now things are worse). I wasn't able to access tech help/customer service from their site, so I called in, and he had me remove sympatico stuff and reinstall it... fine...

Sympatico's software comes with IE 5.x, and I wasn't able to skip installation, but when it asked whether or not to replace the newer files, I said NO. (I was running 6.0).

Well, before my tech support call, IE was running perfectly fine, except those sympatico pages I could not access. But now, IE hangs every couple minutes.

I know this topic has been covered before, and like I said, I've read the posts. Is there a resolution for this problem, other than removing IE?

Okay, this is what I did:

I went to Microsoft's site and downloaded a new IE 6.0 setup file and saved it to my desktop. Then I downloaded IEradicator and wiped out all previous IE files.

    I had 3 errors:
    1. error loading IEDKCS32.DLL
    2. required file not found SHFOLDER.DLL
    3. Show desktop.scf needed
Not sure if these will affect me later.

Then I setup IE 6.0 from my desktop. I'm still having the same problem with IE hanging.

    Is it because of IE 6.0 - should I get a 5.x? I'm running Win98SE.

This is really frustrating. Just when I think I have one thing figured out, something else goes wrong. Can anyone help me?

This will often cause you problems. You may well have kept a file that was version incompat. with the older IE version so IE5 just got real confused.

I think were it me I'd try removing all traces of any IE version, doing another load of the 5X version but answering Yes to each attempt to replace a newer file - after making a note of the filename. If IE5 runs OK, then update to IE6.

Do the above while not connected to the internet and after using Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill all running items except explore and systray. Or better yet, remove and install from safe mode and double check to make sure no AV software has decided to start when you go into safe mode.

Considering my actions were similar to your post before I read it, I'd say, woohoo@me, I did good! Well, sorta.

I IEradicated again, and then restarted. I put in the sympatico cd and installed 5.5 successfully. I was not asked whether or not to replace old/new files because there weren't any. Well, that worked, but it's STILL hanging!

I ran a search on msn to get more ideas - I read somewhere that adding DNS numbers might help, so I called up tech support again and got a primary and secondary DNS, and entered those. Surprisingly ( ) that didn't work either!

I'm about to pull out my hair. I don't want bald spots, I just want my IE to quit 'hanging' around!

Hmmmm. Not fun I'd guess. No real way to figure out exactly what is causing the problems at this point.

My suggestion is to do the following in the listed order and see how it goes after that.
    • Boot to safe mode.
    • remove IE yet again.
    • dump everything from temp and also any files in C: with a pattern of filennnn.chk where nnnn is any number so file0001.chk, etc.
    • device manager and remove your network card.
    • shut down and remove the physical network card.
    • Boot to DOS.
    • Scanreg /fix
    • Scanreg /opt (because your registry has to be torn to shreds by now with all sorts of errors and empty spaces).
    • Scandisk /surface /nosave /autofix
    • Do a 'repair' install of 98 over your existing. Shouldn't mess anything up.
    • shut down and reinstall the network card then boot to normal mode.
    • Try the IE5.x install again and see how it's working.
    • If (hopefully) it's doing well, then upgrade to 6.x
