Your last post contradicts "I understand there will be more that one entry of a dll. file and diffrent versions.â€

See my post 5 Feb 08:56

Yes my previous post I said 7, I meant 9.

I understand the Feb. 5 post.
I understand the way you stated it works.
I just wondered if the same version in two places is normal.

Sorry about the mistake. I just entered in the wrong dll in the post.

That can be very mis-leading at times. And there is NO gaureentee that it will work. And I never believe all that MS says anyway.

Replacing a file with one with the same name does not mean that it will be the CORRECT file.

Been there and done that. Once I COMPLETELY crashed Win98 SE by using a files from the ORIGINAL setup files. Another time I fixed a Windows Problem and lost two games.

Re-install fixed both. There are too many files that are System Specific and/or maintained by same. AND AGAIN. The file that the error show MAY NOT be the actuall problem file. It could well be the next one in line. ( if you can figure out which one it might be )

If the problems still in fact does still exist I disagree with you. 2-3 or more weeks without a solution I would not call having any success. And I do not think you will have success until you find the other file(s) that may be incompatable.

I looked at my shell32.dll files and I have 7 of them
    All are diffrent versions except

And I would bet that Windows is trying to use the wrong one. Or using some other file that is not compatable with it.

My Sys and my AVG have the same version.
    Is this normal????

It may be for your machine.

I just checked on one 98SE machine and there is only 1 ( ONE ) shell32.dll file and it is in the C:\Windows\System.

I just checked the other 98SE machine and that reports the same.

I could be all wet. I could be barking up the wrong tree. I could be thinking completely wrong.

But I do think you are looking at a bad install of Windows. Things may not be going into the proper place. I will wait for other thought on that.

As a added thought which just came to mind. NORTON products USED TO give me problems with MSVCRT.DLL and SHELL32.DLL.

“I just wondered if the same version in two places is normal.â€

Yes, they just happen to be the same version. To be pedantic there is a difference - their filespecs are not the same - ie path\filename - only the filename is the same.

To clarify this aspect and in opposition to the school of thought I mentioned I have a routine called 'Conflict Manager ' within a suite of routines which will look at an apps use of dlls and copies any that it uses which are not in its folder from the System folder. If the System folder then sees a change this will have no affect on the app. Well behaved apps will then always be well behaved. Files like shell32.dll will not get copied as they are not direcctly called by apps which is why, as I mentioned earlier, they don't ship with apps.

BTW, "I respect what you are telling me, but just wanted you know why I am so determined." is not common amongst computer users but those that do suffer this affliction usually end up well versed hobbyists. Those that don't suffer so are usually looking for a quick fix, are not interested with what is 'under the hood' and pop into forums like cats on a hot tin roof. I don't have a problem with this one bit - these folks are simply computer users - they are not computer hobbyists.

Are you sure, you want to do it? Most likely it'll take several THOUSANDS pages.
You can do it by: Start>Run, type: REGEDIT, go Registry>Print
