I've been playing with an old Gateway P2/266 with Windows /95, 64 MB RAM and a Quantum Fireball ST6.4A hard drive. The disk statistics say that the hard drive capacity is 2.15 GB with 1.84 GB free, but a hardware xray program says that this disk drive has 6.5 GB on it. Which is it? and if this drive DOES have 6.5GB on it, then can I use FDISK to make a second partition on the other 4 GB WITHOUT damaging the first partition?

    Thanks for any response.

    Hello Roger!

Windows 95a only supports the FAT16 file system and the maximum partition size is 2 GB = 2048 MB.

My guess is that You have only one partition C: which is at the maximum size and the balance of the harddisk is not partitioned.

Do You have a Windows 95a start disk? If You do, put it in and start the computer from it.
When the computer has started to the A: prompt, type FDISK and hit enter. Next choose Display Partition Information (#4 I think).

Now it should be revealed if You have only the C: at 2048 MB and some 4500 MB unpartitioned space (if it is 6.4 GB as the designation indicates).

Hit ESC (twice I think) to get back to the A: prompt and remove the disk. Restart the computer.

Post back with the results before proceeding because it was a long time since I did this on Win95 and FAT16.

The only way to utilize all disk space is to create further partitions in the unpartitioned space.
I do however not remember if it allows You to create one extended partition of the remaining space and three logical partitions within the extended.

Thanks, Christer, you are exactly right. FDISK does indeed know about that the disk has 6 GB and lets me create an extended partition and logical drives within it. I should have tried it myself before I asked, but I was just so surprised that the people who used this computer for years apparently never knew or tried to use the other 4 GB.

    So thanks again.
