Some time ago, I made a "copy bookmark" file in "My Documents" which I re-save very frequently. That file is then linked to IE and Opera.

I only just noticed after downloading the new version of Opera, that the file only shows about 3/4 of the bookmarks. This happens when I click on the file itself, and in the link in IE and Opera.

When I have added a few new bookmarks to my Netscape 4.7, which has always been my main browser, I click on edit bookmarks, and "save as ", then save it to the "copy bookmark" file which is linked to the other 2 browsers.

Why is the list not complete? How to I fix it?

    Thanks.

    Hi Pat,

Opera's Bookmark Manager has an Import feature, which allows you to import Netscape's Bookmarks. Have you tried using it?

This will not work the way you intend. Your bookmark file is not linked to any other browsers except Netscape. The reason you are not seeing all your bookmarks is because you haven't imported them. Opera has it's own bookmark format, as does internet explorer.

If you really need to share bookmarks between three browsers you need a proper bookmark manager. Otherwise, each time you add more bookmarks with Netscape, you will need to import your bookmarks into opera and internet explorer, which will create duplicates and become impossible to maintain. You can also delete all the bookmarks in opera and internet explorer before importing, which will only work if you never save bookmarks in opera or internet explorer.

In short, to share bookmarks between multiple browsers requires a bookmark manager if you wish to maintain your sanity and your bookmarks.

You one other choice is to view your bookmark.htm (or bookmarks.html) saved bookmark file in opera and internet explorer as a web page. You will not be able to add bookmarks, but it may work if you just need it for viewing.

Check this thread, though things may have changed since 17 december 2002.

Additionally, there are online bookmark services. Googling should turn up something...

Oh no. I posted a long explanation this afternoon, and evidently didn't click on submit, as it is not here.

I tried a couple of bookmark managers a few years ago and found them too complicated. Columbia, I think, was the name of one of them.

The import/export to other browsers, sometimes, can cause problems.

I have cleaned up my old Netscape bookmarks and weeded it down to a more manageable size. It now fits on one page and shows in the link to other browsers. For those bookmarks that I almost never, and may never, access, I went to edit, and using ctl-click, chose a bunch of them at a time, and copied them to a new file I made called Archived Netscape Bookmarks. Should I want to go to one of those old sites, I can go to this file and use copy and paste to the address bar of any browser and it will take me to the site.

Regarding this link method I have been using. The hint was given to me by someone in the ZDNet forums, and many of us have been using it and found it a convenient method of keeping bookmarks up to date in a couple of browsers.

To make the link, go to edit "save as" and save the bookmarks to a file which I called "copy Netscape bookmarks. Open that file and click on its' address to put it onto the clipboard, then open IE browser and paste its address into the address bar of IE. Now, go to IE favourties and bookmark that page. You now have a link in your favourites to this copy of Netscape bookmarks which is in your hard drive.

Any time you click on favourites, the drop down menu will show the Netscape bookmark file. Click on that and the listing of all the bookmarks will be there. Then just click on which site you want.

Weekly, I go to edit "save as" and save the bookmarks to that "copy Netscape bookmarks ". Then the IE favourties are also updated.

    ....Too much typing....:)

Things are under control right now, so I'll let it be for the time being.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

    Pat
