I downloaded updates to my Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator yesterday, now my computer will only boot in Safe Mode. Tried using GoBack and nothing worked.
I get the message that Windows failed to load and chose one the following, etc. I can sometimes l boot in Safe Mode, but am getting this pop-up message:
    Error loading
    C;\WINNT\System32\NvCpl.dll
A dynamic lin library(DLL) initialization routine failed.

When I first installed the Easy CD Creator, I had trouble booting up, but found if I did not leave the CD I had written to in, it was ok.

    Thanks.

Ah, Roxio. You have to love them---they keep so may repairmen in business!

That dll is from the NVidia driver for your graphics card.

Try reinstalling the driver in Safe Mode. If you can't, remove the display driver in Device Manager and reboot. Then reinstall the NVidia driver.

How do I re-install the driver? At this point, I am wary enough to need some hand holding. Thanks.

We'll need to find an updated one. If you didn't install it originally, or you didn't install it from a CD that came with the card, you'll need to download it.

Do you know exactly what NVidia card you have?

If it's a GeForce or TNT2, the version 53.03 driver (8.5 megs) is here:

    ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/53.03/53.03_winxp2k_english_whql.exe

Then, how to get it on your computer.

While in Safe Mode, look for folders named NVidia. You may find a setup file in one of them from which you could reinstall the driver without the download.

I do not know what NVidia card I have. I did not install it. I spent a lot of time going through regedit. Under HKey_Classes_Root, I found:
    .dll------Data:
    Application/X-msdownload
    (default) {098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

NVDIA Corporation is listed under software, under Hkey-Current-User. It seems to have lots to do with this computer.

I find that I cannot run Search, getting a message that a file needed to run it cannot be found and that I should run Setup, which I have, but still get the same message.

I am using a 2 year old Gateway computer which had Windows XP loaded. I do have Norton System Works. Running that wouldn't help with the NVidia card, would it? How long is it safe to continue using the Safe Mode? Am I just making everything worse?

If you don't have Service Pack 1 installed, you certainly ought to do that.

    But, first things first.

It is, well, "safe" to run XP in Safe Mode forever if you want. I am assuming that you don't ;)

Go to your Device Manager and remove the NVidia driver.

If you have Pro, go to Start > Run and type: devmgmt.msc

If you have Home, right-click My Computer, Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager button.

Click the + next to Display Adapters and record what it says about what graphics card you have. Then, right-click the card and choose "uninstall ".

Close everything and reboot the computer. Hopefully, you can then start XP in normal mode (with passably good graphics--don't be surprized if you have a less than good display at this point).

You should be able to go online and download the NVidia driver from the above link (if you have GeForce or TNT2--if not, let us know what card you saw in Device Manager).

    Install the downloaded driver.

How about uninstalling Roxio, rebooting, do a System Restore to a date prior than Roxio, and starting over? I am assuming the NVidia stuff was fine until you added Roxio?

That's a very good idea, Johanna. I guess I was operating under the assumption that NVidia had actually been damaged by Roxio. And I've had very bad experiences trying to uninstall Roxio without errors appearing on the next boot, so I have a psychological block against removing it ;)

But your idea is logical and certainly worth a try :D

Roxio exits better uninstalling from the program, not the add/remove tab in the control panel. Easy CD Creator ought to come with a neon orange label- "Warning! Installation of this item on an XP computer has completely unpredictable results, and do not be surprised if things go terribly wrong, or ask us, Roxio, why. We don't know, either, but we sell a ton of this software! "

Thanks for your suggestions. I admit I am afraid to do anything, but..... I just spent a lot of time going through the Roxio Users Support Forum. Sad....most pleas for help just sit there or are joined by other similar pleas.

Joanna, how do I exit from the program? As far as I know I had no problems with NVidia stuff before downloading the updates.

As an aside, one post to the Users Forum said they never download updates until everyone else straightens out the problems. They sometimes wait six months.

Abraxas, I believe I do have Service Pack 1 installed. I can check this by going to the Microsoft Windows Update site, right.

My head is swimming. Thanks so much for your support.

bookie - you can right-click on My Computer then left-click on Properties. It will tell you if you have the SP loaded or not.

I uninstalled Roxio from the Programs Install/Uninstall feature, but this did not solve the problem.

Then I inserted the Gateway disc to reinstall drivers and reinstlled the NVidia driver. Thank you for identifying that driver for me.

If I am reading the information correctly, I need to install Service Pack 3, but am not finding it at the Microsoft site.

Again thank you. I was actually getting used to Safe Mode. What a difference to have the real graphics back.

When I went to Window Update today (I was told that some critical updates came out this last weeK), the page would not come up.

    I got the following:

    WINDOWS UPDATE ERROR:

Windows Update has encountered an error. Please try the following:

Install the latest version of the Microsoft XML Parser from the Microsoft Download Center:

In the Worldwide Downloads list, select the appropriate language for your computer and then click Go.
In the Keywords box, type Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack and then click Go.
In the list of available downloads, click Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4).
Follow the instructions on your screen.
After the installation, try the Windows Update site again.

You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows Update.

Send error number to Microsoft (0x800A0007)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident; you may or may not receive a response.

On re-reading this I see it says Service Pack 4. Once again, I am at a loss.
