As a long time Netscape user, whe remains satisfied and much prefers it to IE, are there advantages now to moving over to Mozilla from 7.1 or are they about the same.

Are the facilities (such as multiple profiles and tabbed browsing) that are in Netscape maintained in Mozilla? Is the e-mail client roughly similar?

    Mozilla v Netscape

Yup! Is the simple answer. Mozilla is what the now defunct Netscape should have been, and as a former Netscape user, you should feel very much at home and a lot happier.Mozilla is now on version 1.6,but Firebird seems to be catching up fast, but I reckon there is a way to go yet.Try them both, but treat as completely differents apps. when you install.

The e-mail client in Mozilla is exactly the same as in NS7.1, except, perhaps that Mozilla cannot be set up with Netscape Webmail or AOL mail, if you have them.
MozFirebird is a standalone Navigator, i.e. with no mail of its own, but it can make use of one of the several extensions, or add-ons, which allows it to open an external application, by clicking on a shortcut on the top toolbar. I have set up every kind of Mail Client which I had, six at its peak (I am cutting back), making MozFirebird a really amazing program.
Thunderbird, a bit behind Firebird in development, is the likely Mail Client for Firebird, which is derived from Mozilla Mail.
I have a Thunderbird, a NS4.x mail, and Outlook Express shortcut in my Firebird.

    Welcome to the Forum, boutells!

    Hi boutells,

Read the Mozilla 1.5 FAQ, which will give you the big picture, and also includes a brief Netscape vs. Mozilla item. Another informative read is the Mozilla 1.6 Release Notes.

    Download Mozilla 1.6

If you choose the Zip file (10.8 MB) all that is necessary, is to unzip the file to the folder of your choice. There are no Registry entries added. When you upgrade to a new Release, merely delete the Mozilla folder.

Aesthetically, there is no difference. The Mail & Newsgroup setup is identical to Netscape.

How did we ever do without Tabbed Browsing? You will be delighted with the Preference to either add a new Tab Group, or replace the existing Tab Group.

One precaution: do not share a Profile with Netscape. From Mozilla:
Do not share a profile between Netscape and Mozilla browsers. Doing this can lead to unpredictable results, which may include loss of Search settings and preferences and unchecked growth of the Bookmarks file (large enough to freeze your system). It is best to create a new profile for each, or manually copy (and change the name) of an existing profile.

There are two preventive steps you can take to ensure that Mozilla doesn't pick up your Netscape Profile.
    1. Create a new Profile before installing Mozilla
    2. Move the Netscape Profile folder to a temporary folder before installing Mozilla.

That being said; if you plan to uninstall Netscape before installing Mozilla, then there is no problem in using the Netscape Profile for Mozilla. It is only when you have both installed that the unique Profiles are necessary.

    HTH,

    Ramona :D
