I have OE / IE and I use Earthlink. I am receiving so many advertizements that it is slowing down loading my email. I want to change my email address and delete my current one.
    Help!

You'll need to contact your ISP and he can do that for you.

Though changing your email address is an option, you should also be aware that most advertisements that you receive have an option, normally at the end and usually in very small print, that permits you to opt out of future mailings.

Regardless of whether or not you do end up changing your email address I would also suggest that you take the time to sign up for a free email account, such as Hotmail, that are available on the net. This is a great way to reduce these types of mailings from reaching your REAL email account in the first place.

Personnally I maintain a Hotmail account and use it in most cases where I am asked to provide an address to register at a site. I haven't given out the Hotmail address to family or friends so I know that almost everything received by that account will be junk, as such I only bother to check it every week or so, and then only to delete the accumulated messages, so I don't exceed my authorized usage. This keeps 98% of junk mail from ever reaching my regular account.

    Hope this helps. :)

    Write some message "Rules "

When you get a "spam" e-mail in OE click on Messages up on the menu bar and create some custom rules for your messages. You can also "block senders" from there.

You can use a "rule" to include more than one spammer or a single spammer that uses several ways to send you the same piece of junk. :) I recommend choosing "Delete from server" in the second list of choices and you won't see anything that fits the criteria of a given rule.

It may take you a while but you can eventually cut this BS down to almost nothing. I presently have only 13 rules and I get less than 3 spam mails a week. :D You can see your list of rules and blocked senders list from the "Tools" menu, btw.

Be aware of doing this. This is also a way of the spammers verifying an email address as valid..

    Good point aleekat.

I have long ago stopped doing that since it appeared that when they removed me from their list they sold me off to someone else.

Also a large percentage of the time I would get my remove request e-mail returned due to there being no such address or some such reason. It's all a waste of time I think.

I decided to quit validating my stupidity. :)

Molehill--You should be able to create new email addresses through OE by clicking Tools|Accounts|Add|Mail and following the prompts in the Internet Connection Wizard. Before you do this write down the settings in Tools|Accounts|Properties|Server tab|Server Information for your existing email address. You will use these in creating the new account.
You can delete your present account through Tools|Accounts|highlight present account name|click Remove. But suggest you wait until you set up the new account and know it works.
Also, it is possible you will have to keep the present email address if your ISP uses it to contact you and identify you. Some ISP's will not change the original email address in their records although you can create and use other email addresses as described above. But as Rod has suggested, maybe the old address can then become your address for spam!

    You're dead on welshjim,

It's my unfortunate experience that the first address assigned is going to be your forever or until you request that the ISP assign you another. Even if you set up other accounts, you'll not block the mail from that original one, even if you delete its setup locally. You have to get THE MAN to do that. When my Cable provider went belly up and the new owner took over, thewy assigned me a new IP address and name. I think they ratted me off to all the spammers because i immediately started getting spam. I have never been able to wiggle out from under the original address by doing anything locally. I'll get around to burning their ears someday. :( Perhaps another part of their anatomy as well. :D

NEVER NEVER use those "remove-me" links in an email. Here's why:

Most spammers like that use spiders to gather email addresses from websites and webpages, plus they generate random email addreses using software that can do that. Most have no clue that the email they send is ever received by anyone. They do not know if the addresses are valid.

How do they find out if your address is valid? When you reply to them with that "remove-me" link. Sure, you may get removed from that mailing, but you will get put on 100 others!

I requested my ISP to change my email address over a year ago.
I notified ONLY the people in my address book of the change.
When I forward jokes or etc. to friends I always send as "Bcc. "
I asked my friends to do the same or remove me from their forward list!:)
I have received NO spam since I changed my address.

I use Hotmail for my internet address. After I register on a site or chat with someone on the internet that I think I would want to hear from I add them to my Hotmail address book. Hotmail has the best spam blocker I have found. I set it up to trash ALL mail not in my Hotmail address book. That takes care of all the spam.

Sorry to hear that several of you have had had such bad experiences using the opt-out feature in email messages. I've used it many times and have not experienced a problem with receiving even more junk then I was before, but as I stated in my first post, I'm very cautious about where I use my regular email address in the first place.

    :)
