My partner switched to Netscape 7.1 last week (running on Windows XP Home) at my suggestion. He asked me this AM to check some suspicious email (he doesn't know much about computers) and while I was doing this I noticed something strange.

Although Local Folders shows as an account in the left pane of the email window, there are no folders shown nor is the little triangle there to open Local Folders to show them. I tried File, New Folder... but when I type in a name and click OK, nothing happens. (The dialog window reamins open until I click Cancel.)

Our two IMAP accounts show correctly with the standard folders.

How do I add the standard folders, Inbox, Drafts, Unsent Messages, Templates and Sent to his Local Folders?

    Hi castingman,

That does sound strange indeed. When you view the ~\profilename\*.slt\Mail\Local Folders using Windows Explorer, are the folders (Inbox, Drafts, Trash, etc.) listed? If so, delete all files with an MSF extension.

Ensure that Netscape and Quick Launch are closed before editing.

The Local Folders is created by default and you shouldn't add anything. That there are no subfolders indicate a problem.

Did you do a virus scan, after checking out the suspicious email?

I found Inbox, Drafts, Trash, etc. files (no extensions, all 0 bytes) in two places. One path started C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\... and the other C:\Documents and Settings\profile name\Application Data\Mozilla\... (The *.slt folder names were not the same.)

I deleted the files, with NS and Quick Launch closed, rebooted and opened NS Mail. Still have the same problem.

(I didn't scan the suspicious email as it was identical to one I had received so I just deleted it from our ISP's server.)

    castingman,
    Something is strange here, as:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\profilename\*.slt\Mail\Local Folders
is the Profile location for Windows 98/ME

    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\Local Folders
is the Profile location for Windows XP

Look in Netscape Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
    Highlight "Local Folders "
In the right pane select: View settings for this account
To which Profile does the Local directory path point? Is this the location of the Default Profile?
You deleted ONLY the files with MSF extensions, correct? The files without the MSF extensions are the ones that contain Mail. You deleted the Local Folders MSF files in both *.slt folders which you found?

This is confusing... but I think I've figured most of it out.

Here's what seems to have happened:

    1) He was running Windows 98.

    2) Installed NS 7.1

    3) I installed a new HD as master, set old HD as slave and installed Windows XP on new HD.

    4) Told him to reinstall his programs and transfer data files he wanted to save.

    5) He thought he needed to save the NS mail files so he moved them to C:\Windows\Application Data\..., same location as on the Windows 98 slave HD.

    6) He the set the paths for his two Imap accounts to this location but not for Local Files.

Now, I've changed the path for his local files to C:\Windows \Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\*.slt\Mail\Local Folders and now the folders show up in the email window.

So... should I leave everythig as is or should I redirect everything to C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\*.slt\... and move the files to the corrrect location?

    Hi castingman,

If your friend is running Windows XP on his new HD, with Netscape 7.1 installed, then it would seem practical to me to move the files to this location. I've never worked with multiple or partitioned HD's, so I'm out of my element here.

I'll move the files to the correct location for Windows XP.

    Thanks for your help.
